Only thing i know to look for in a Turbo 80 series is to make sure it has had the Big end Bearings replaced at some stage as from factory the early ones were having problems. And if its Manual a reco gearbox would be a bonus.

What ruff said. If you dont want to have to worry bout bigends, try and find (and i mean TRY) a post 1995 TD, the 24V ones, these are the go, and will be my step up from the DX i have now (in a few years time). The 1HD-FT is a brilliant motor, so is the 1HD, but only if it has been looked after.

Expect to pay $35000+ for a GOOD post '95 1HD-FT powered 80 series, and anywhere between $20000-$30000 for a pre 95, 1HD powered one.

Good to see you have seen the light

to go further with the big-end bearings problems - no matter what year you get, replace the big end bearings with aftermarket items. the toyota bearings are a crappy alloy for allegedly environmental reasons and they aren't much chop - and failures are catastrophically expensive.

look for cracks in the chassis around the front panhard rod mount and crossbrace, and front and rear upper spring perches, especially oh higher km models.

also even though they are a direct injected turbo diesel they are not super economical on fuel and if you are used to small cars you will be stung by fuel bills. they can be driven pretty lean but usually if you've got the power you use it, and big turbo diesels are thirsty when driven hard. BUT don't be tempted to get a petrol model even though they are a million bucks cheaper, but the fuel consumption is shocking.

good luck finding a turbo at all with less than 200,000km and under $25,000. the multivalves are even more rare and more expensive. the manual gearboxes need overhauling around 150,000km on the turbo models. Check the service history thoroughly, the oil change interval is not as critical on direct injected engines but make sure things like timing belt, valve clearances, injectors, filters etc are changed/serviced at the recommended intervals.

a 4" lift will clear 35's ok but consider a 2" lift and 33's for touring.

So your are taking the plunge hey......... woohoo. Basically it`s what all the others said go for the latest model diesel 80 that you can get. I have looked at a few lately and they are $$$. Look at a price range of at least above $25,000, but i suppose you already know that .

Go for it em!! I take it you got rid of your roza then? What are you going to do about your username now???

im not spending too much, they seem to be alot cheaper round my way, I have found a few to check out,

Toyota Landcruiser DX 1997 Manual, 245000kms, 80 series diesel, Old Man Emu 4in lift kit, dual batteries, Safari snorkel, stainless bull-bar, Hayman Reese towbar, dual tanks, full service history, very good condition, $19500

Toyota Landcruiser GXL 1992, manual, 170000kms, 4.2L turbo diesel, power windows and mirrors, central locking, air conditioned, CD, AM/UHF radios, dual batteries, snorkel, steel bull-bar with Warn winch, IPF spotlights, diff lock, mags, 285 x 75 R16 mud terrain tyres, spare wheel carrier, towbar, steel side steps and rear bash guards, $20000 negotiable

Toyota Landcruiser GXL 80 Series 4.2 diesel, 5 speed, snorkel, lift kit, 35in mud terrains, CD, excellent condition, $21500.

I found more that arn't modified, too many to chose from, Im not spending over 20k atm, as long as its better than the feroza...

I have my eye on the patrols as well, but im not allowed to copy hoonz so i dont know yet..

Thats cheap and chances are with all those mods it has allready had the bearings done. But its also prob a bitt rough around the body. And unless its got an aftermarket diff lock then it prob has 2 factory electric lockers.

something doesn't ring true with that ad. it's either very rough cosmetically or mechanically, might not be a factory turbo. it's too cheap. being a '92 I'd be having a real good hard look for those chassis cracks. if it's all good, it's a bargain.

another question..
:?
Whats the deal with the 'full time 4wd' 80's, does'nt that include all GXL models including the factory turbo'd ones..? Ive been told not too get full time 4wd, so if its true that means i should be getting standard diesel nothing else..? or not.

Em
It is true GXL`s are fulltime 4wd, the reason people say not to get one is that fulltime puts alot more strain on the drivetrain (c'vs etc) and you use a shite more fuel aswell. You can buy a kit though that is relatively cheap to convert it to partime.

Sorry i don`t have a link.

you mean apart from having the most inefficient petrol engines of any 4WDs? or the most ancient technology 6 cylinder turbo diesels that make pathetic power and blow smoke and use stacks of fuel? or the trashy "high-tech" 4 cylinder turbo diesel that drops its bundle after 50,000km because it has to work too hard lugging an overweight truck around? and the non existant ergonomics? or the tops gearboxes that strip out 5th gear if they get used for towing? and the horrendous front end that always gets the wobbles if you lift it more than an inch? yeah I suppose apart from all that Patrols are pretty good trucks

I have a DX 'Pov' pack - Here's the deal.

Those prices you have are great!!! Couple of things to look for to make sure you don't have a dud. When it's cold - see if it's a hard downshift into 2nd or crunches up to third - if so - then the synchro's aren't happy - but it's something you can over come...

Check the lower panhard mounts - they do get cranky witha bit of lift - and check the front diff housing - standard ones are as weak as pi55 and bend after a jump or two...

Ultimately teh part time 4wd models are just fantastic - they are as strong as (my car can attest to that - it has proven worth - 90,000 km in tow year 40,000 in the bush! :D :finger: ) and the fuel savings are well worth it - don't be scared to buy a non turbo model either - chuck a 2.5" exhaust and get it tuned = $400 performance upgrade - mine fly's along and has heaps of grunt pushing 35's.

Only real PITA is the rear indicators - they get nailed a bit - and the standard rear bumper can be torn off a bit. Bugger. Good luck.

PS - why be a number with a Pootrol - they are like a55holes everyone has one!!! Be unique an bend your 80 yourself!!

I forgot to mention things like semi-floating rear axle only on the nissan, self-grenading locking hubs, ridiculous indicators/tail lights in the plastic rear bumper, rear door mounted spare that rattles the door open on corrugations, pathetically weak lower rear trailing arms that crumple as soon as they see a rock let alone hit one, lousy floating caliper brakes that fade badly and once you add 35" tyres onlt even lock them up, I'm sure I could go on...

as for Limo centres, I have one that I pulled from my 80 series which should go into the newer 40 series diffs, in preetty good condition, only 80,000km - if you like I'll open it up and do  things to the preload, how does $200 sound?
