Dodgy High Lift Jack - Please Read
To cut a long story short. I got a new High Lift Jack bout 2 weeks ago. I was using it tonight to jack up the rear of my car as i was fitting a new exhaust. I had the rear door open and was jacking it by the chassis where the tow bar bolts on. I had the rear door open and the spare wheel gets in the way with it closed. I jacked it up to the hight that i needed it, put axle stands under the car and went back to the jack.
The handle was in the down position, so i returned it to the upright position to flick the lever over so that i could lower the jack. As i've returned the handle to the upright position, the jack has just given way, colapsed. This has just droped my car probably a good 3 inches onto the axle stands. The resulting shock smashed my rear windscreen and sent glass scattering everywhere.
Nothing else was damaged. Luckily i had no body parts etc under the car! I am really not happy bout this, does anyone think that i have a case legally. I'm ringing up for some free legal advice tomorrow. But i at least want my money back for the jack.
Give me your thoughts people.

Maybe if you prove the lift jack is faulty, you could pin liability on the manufacturer but it's proberly more hassle than it's worth. Rear glass windows costs $700 AUD or if your insured you maybe better to pay the excess on the policy as a claim of this nature won't affect your premium or no claim bonus.

Well, the jack was just a "Toolex Farm Jack" from EPTS Gasweld, it cost me $90. I have contacted the company and they said they'd give me my money back for the jack (no shit). I also contacted Consumer Affairs Saftey Section and they jumped on it! The guy i spoke to lives near me so he's actually coming round tomorrow to pick it up.
They're going to check if its faulty (i know it is, i've had trouble with it since i got it). There is a section in the law/act that pretty much says that the company is liable but apparently there is another section that contradicts it, but if it is found to be faulty then wooo hoooo.
It is a massive inconvieniance though. But its the principal i'm fighting for here. I'll keep you all posted.

Hey dude!....
You have no luck! sorry to hear about the window.
I just tried Oriental 4wdrive and Commercial for you and they have sent their last one to Northern Queensland a few weeks ago. They also tried the hotline and nothing there either, sorry mate.

I rang windscreens o'brien and they still haven't got back to me. Apparently there is about 4 different types of rear window depending on what year the vehicle is. Different temperd glass or something. My car is a 1993 model.
I will be getting it replaced but its just a matter of when. If i can't claim it off of the company that sold me the jack then i'll claim it on my insurance and i get a free windscreen a year on my policy
If worse comes to worse, There is a type of plastic called suntuff, which is stronger than glass, has a uv filtering bonus and dosen't scratch. I might even give that a go but i do believe that the rear windscreens have a curve in them.
The jack got picked up yesterday buy consumer affairs so i'll just wait and see.
