No 4x4?

Post by Maddog »

My 85 Hilux wont b a 4x4.

Hubs unlocked and 4x4 engaged, front shaft turns.
Hubs locked and 4x4 disengaged, front shaft wont spin.

So I am guessing there is something wrong with the hubs.....I havn't heard or done anything for an axle to snap or a CV......

Any clues?

the locking hubs rely on a spring to push the clutch across, so if your hubs are full of mud etc then even if the switch turns easily they may not be locking. undo the 6 little bolts and have a look inside. chekc both sides, it might be on ly one of them that is stuck.

if its locked in low or high 4 and the front shaft is still spinning there is something wrong in your transfer case. does it select low range?

If the front shaft doesn't spin with the hubs locked in it means they (the front locking hubs) are working ok

eh?

I think we need clarification on what he means by 'spins' - ie does it mean 'can turn it by hand' or does it mean 'turns when you drive the vehicle'.

you assumed the former and I the latter, and obviously the diagnosis relies on the definition

Sorry, yes the shaft turns when in 4x4/unlocked hubs when driving....and does not turn when in 2x4/hubs locked.

If one hub works and the other doesn't, wouldnt the front shaft turn if the good one was locked? It seems unusual that they would both be faulty at the same time when one week earlier they were working.

cool that's what I thought.

no, because the one hub that is working will spin that axle, which will in turn spin the axle on the other side backwards inside the housing instead of turning the drive shaft. it doesn't take much grit or muck to stop a locking hub from working and they don't seal real well.
