LJ Series
LJ Series
hey just need a bit of info, one of my friends has been looking at an LJ for sale, would like to know some things before he decides to buy it.
1- is it alot of work to put a bigger engine in it (he has a 1.5L corola engine he would like to put in it?)
2- is it alot of work to SPOA it using hilux diff's, and would this be legal in QLD?
3- would u be able to fit a rear seat into one, or is it too small or narrow?
4- would u need to get a soft top conversion engineered? also would the SPOA need to be engineered?
Thanks in adavnce

1- is it alot of work to put a bigger engine in it (he has a 1.5L corola engine he would like to put in it?) It depends on what you mean by a 'lot of work ?? This LJ has a 1.6L Vitara EFI in it
2- is it alot of work to SPOA it using hilux diff's, and would this be legal in QLD? Not sure about QLD laws, but I'm pretty sure that if the model of vehicle didn't get released with SPOA, then it isn't possible ??. The LJ has also been SPOA using Sierra axles, Vitara centres
3- would u be able to fit a rear seat into one, or is it too small or narrow? Too small and too narrow
4- would u need to get a soft top conversion engineered? also would the SPOA need to be engineered? YES, if you want to drive it on anything but private property....it will need engineering !

Not a big deal, but might be a challenge to get passed by QDOT. Check with an engineer or an authorised officer.

More difficult than usual considering the centred diff centre in the front of the LJ. Stock hilux diff would have the leaf spring mounted on top of the pumpkin. No easy way round that. QDOT would be less than impressed too.

Dunno. Measure it and find out I would guess you could get 1 seat in there, but not 2.
Aza wrote:4- would u need to get a soft top conversion engineered? also would the SPOA need to be engineered?
Soft top has to be blueplated, but it's not difficult. SPOA is tough. Strictly it's illegal but they have been engineered before. Even if you do get it engineered you may still be pulled off the road by QDOT.

An early sierra might be a better option Shouldn't cost any more really it's more about the overall condition at that age

Yeah you can fit rear seats into them, i think some may have even come out with rear seats in them but they generally take up all the space. Also if you have ever driven one of these things you'll realise the extra weight really kills the already lacking performance.

Not that that is gonna matter when we all know it's gonna end up with Vitara power...
I dont reckon that, these guys are young like me and on a smaller budget by the sounds of it. spendin a few grand on a engine swap like that, wouldnt be high priority.
My 2 stroke goes along fine when only i'm in it, but add a passenger and whoa feel the difference, I'd say if he's got the corolla motor whack that in, i guess it depends how legal you want to be with the conversion

Here's a few pics of the lil' blue LJ to entice the viewers...
This is the flex that can be acheived with spring over using standard rear sierra springs on modified suzuki diffs (mix of LJ, Sierra and Vitara) These were taken about 3-4 yrs ago when it didn't have the vitara 1600 in it, nor lockers etc, etc... The lucky lil' scotsman in the picture is the owner, kenny
