3.5 V6 Low Range T/Case Gears
Hi Ian, you will be extremely pleased to know I am going to pick up a 3.5 V6 auto t/case on friday so we can get this project on the go

Yes I have an NL auto t/case in my possession now
I did learn a few things :-
- 3.5 V6 5sp is much bigger than the 3.0 version
- 3.0 t/case will not bolt up to a 3.5 auto or 5sp
- bellhousings from 3.5 & 3.0 are extremely close in size and shape (maybe able to bolt 3.0 auto or 5sp box to a 3.5 - for those looking to do an engine swap)
- input gear from 3.0 auto t/case fits the 3.5 auto (23 spline 30.5mm diameter)
- input gear from 3.5 5sp t/case is 27 spline 30.5mm diameter (3.0 is 24 spline thinner diameter)
- 3.5 V6 gearboxes and t/cases are substantially bigger than 3.0 V6
I'm going to have to get a 5sp 3.5 t/case as well because of the different input gear compared to the 3.0 version I was hoping they would be the same to make life easier

GOD DAMN (as Swartzy would say) the gears in a 3.5 V6 t/case are MASSIVE you are talking Landcruiser size here.
The case is a lot bigger than a 3.0 and there is much more spare room.
At first glance with the inspection plates removed we think a much better ratio than 2.85 can be achieved.
The gear tooth profile is massive such a huge upgrade from a 3.0.
I'll take pics of the gears tomorrow when Barry gets the rest of it apart.

Yeah my gut feeling (providing when we remove the idler gear it doesn't have a thrust face for the bearing support) that at least 3.15 would be achievable if not lower. Will know the exact ratio soon.
But this project is virtually starting from scratch as there is only the auto input gear broaching tool that is common the rest of the tooling will have to be done from scratch though

Any idea if the NJ,K,L t/cs are the same as the NM/P? I asssume the 2.8TDI t/c is the same as the 3.5L t/c. The gearbox and t/c ratios are the same in the NL brochure I have got, which I hope are the same as the NJ I drive.

Yes definitely the NJ/NK/NL t/cases are the same even between 3.5 V6's & 2.8 TDI's. I did look at both on friday at a wreckers and the 2.8 TDI gearboxes and t/cases are slightly different mainly in mounting points and bracketry.
I'm fairly sure the NM/NP cases are also the same but I have to check the part numbers first.

So you reckon that your 2.85 gears wont go in? that would have made things easy, eh.
anyway if there is heaps of room & the cases are plenty strong then makes you wonder why Mitsu didnt change to a half decent low gear when they had the chance.

what are the implications of going as low as you can go, so to speak.
if you can get the gearing of the low gear to say around 4.0 to 1. that would be effectively doubling the gearing & the torque & would give a low low of about 53:1 with an auto (even ower with manual). This would be great for downhills etc but may be too low???
would there be a problem with this?? the 3.5l motor is a reasonably powerful motor & thats a lot of torque multiplication.

Funny you should mention that - on Sunday I was contemplating a DiD powered NJ Shorty...
More grunt to drive those 33s at 100km/h and better fuel economy too. Just gotta win the lotto, and it's happening!

When you look at the Tojo, Nissan & Suzuki low range gears their all up around 3.6:1 and higher. We have no doubt whatsoever that the 3.5 V6 t/case will handle the extra torque it really is a beefy unit the chain and sprockets have also been beefed up.
We also found that the auto input gear does not have a backlash eliminator and the front of the case comes off allowing swaping of the gears quite easily not like the 3.0 cases which have to be totally dismantled to get all the gears out. Mark has the gears now calculating what ratio is possible and associated costs.

Ado, yes mate they will be done for the 5sp as well.
Should find out tomorrow what ratio is achievable no idea of cost at the moment.
Still trying to assess suitability for NM/NP Paj's as I've found their t/cases have different gear part no's to the earlier 3.5 t/cases

Yep the pilot set are ready to be picked up and fitted to a 3.5 auto t/case that a forum member is going to rigorously test for us. This will take sveral months and all going well we will do a production run of 20-25 units which would be ready later in the year.
No idea of cost just yet but in the order of $1200 Oz per set.
