Try calling a shop in Melb called 4Play Offroad, they swap in standard vitara power steering into sierra's- I've had it done...

I will get pics on the weekend for you.
Redzook,
I had 35s - didn't get a chance to go offroad with it, but it wasn't really light, just right I would say.
There was assistance there, but you could still feel the road if you know what I mean.
Others on this board have the vit steer and say that it works well - I think one had 33s on with the steer.

The vitara box is not too hard to fit, but the bolt pattern is different, so there is some fabrication involved. also, to get the box in the optimum position, there are a couple of issues with pitman arm position. ( you can't fit a sierra arm to a vit box
It is not the best box in the world, but I have only had experience with it steering 36's at under 5psi, so most boxes will stall out under some circumstances.
I would straight fit a jimny box. It is probably about as "strong" as a vit box, but the lack of fabrication involved in fiting it would have to be a plus.

Thanks for the tip re tarago. When we remounted the vit steering box on Critta, we ended up using a vit arm, but the clearance between the top of the ball joint stud and the chassis is pretty tight. Has never touched though. It is a much flatter arm, which is cool though, as in our application (SPUA, no flex
) it gets everything up and out of the way nicely. For my money though, with a more stock sierra, I would go Jimny, as there will be no need to fabricate. Should make certificatons HEAPS easier too.

What is involved in adapting the input shaft off the sierra to a jimminy box?
I really do like the idea of less work. Just means the vehicle gets finished earlier

when looking at all this I got quoted $400 for a Jimny box, then use vitara pump and pulleys.
I ended up with the whole lot out of a SIERRA for $450
Jap ones had power steer and EFI 1.3s in them, more people should hassle there local import wrecker to get them, I was quoted $1200 for a halfcut with 1.3 EFI P/S and aircon + good panels to sell.

that jimny box is a great price.
Jimny box is definitely the best answer - no mods to chassis required at all. I used the jimny pitman with no dramas.
If it's already been thought of...
There has to be a better way...
