Need some advice.
For some time now I have been thinking about gettingone of those Ox hydraulic winches that work off the power steering circuit.
ANyway I had an idea that with lockers I could use a wheel winch instead (much cheaper).
Does anyone know if you can still buy these (I remeber at least 20 years ago , you could).
basically it is a hub that attaches to your rim using your wheel nuts.
You then use a rope wrapped around the hub as a winch powered by the drive to your wheels. This could be used on the front or the rear.
What do you guys reckon??

worked well if it was just a bit of mud etc you were stuck in, But, if you were quite stuck or had a rock etc on your way, Bang goes the CV!
So wouldn't recommend it, I went and bought a hand winch and air locker, and have never used the hand winch since

Don't know about the wheel winch - the problem with them is that the tyres' rolling diameter is bigger than that of the rim(winch drum) that you would bolt onto the studs. this means as soon as the wheel that the winch is mounted on gets any traction the cable gets loose and falls off and wraps around the bloody wheel.
However I can recommend the OX hydraulic winch as I have one on my NJ - its awsome, I have used mine heaps for all sorts of stuff ( draging landrover defenders out of the mud moslty ) and I love that fact that it will pull al day long with the enging just idling - the only thing is that they are vey slow compared to an electric(yuk) one.

The trouble with wheel winches is that the tyre that is on the wheel that the drum(winch) is bolted to is a larger diameter than the drum so as soon as the wheel gets traction the cable comes loose and falls off and then wraps around the bloody wheel.
But I can fully recommend the OX hydraulic winch - I have one on my NJ and its awsome - I espacially love the way it pulls all day with the engine at idle ( no dead batteries or burnt out 12v motors)
the only thing is that, compared to an electric one, they're a bit slow
