leaking steering box (big leak) on GQ
leaking steering box (big leak) on GQ
here is a pic showing how bad the leak is after my misfortune last night. Once the car sits for ages t stops dripping, but during running and once stopped briefly, it pours out.
there is only a small amount of p/s fruid left in the resevoir and whenever you turn the wheel the pump tried to suck the fluid or some shit and makes a loud noise like there is no fluid in the actual unit, if u know what i mean.
this only happened after getting the car bogged last night, and when getting snatched out, it ripped the steering wheel straight out of my hands, i couldnt move the steering wheel once in the mud coz it was just so compacted around the tyre (front left), so when i was getting snatched in must have broken something inside the steering unit possibly or broken some kind of gasket or seal. i got no idea.
Anyone else got ideas?
Nissan GQ 1992 it is from.

chimpboy wrote:Can you see damage anywhere else that explains the steering wheel being 90 degrees off centre?
If not I am thinking you've got some impressive damage inside there.
Jason
i havent noticed anything, all i know is the steering wheel have turned 90 degress clockwise, the steering felt heavy when driving it into the garage just before but thats probably coz of the fluid.
so yeah, cant see any other visible damage like bent steering arms etc, but i will have a look in better light tomorrow. so i am guessing internal

This is typical when early GQ steering boxes are given a big shock load. The small 8 mm headed bolts that bolt through the cap where the steering column shaft inputs to generally stretch or break and that is the end of your steering box. Bad idea to tighten them up but it can be done to get u home. Best idea is to replace with another steering box off of late GQ or GUs as they are much stronger.

If you can see the 4 small 8mm headed bolts that will be loose/stretched, these are much larger on later boxes, not sure what year they changed but mine is '97 and has the stronger box. Check out a GU box for comparison.

you can clearly see the leak in the middle pic...
it looks to be coming from the join where the wormshaft housing meets the sector shaft housing.
GU ones fit and apparently are stronger and more powerfull .
not sure about pitman arms though as they are different.
