SPOA vs SPUA gauntlet day?
SPOA vs SPUA gauntlet day?
There seems to be a bit of arguement between SPOA and SPUA.
Has a challenge ever been laid down? nudge nudge wink wink......

I think I can say from experience being one of the minority on this board who have actually owned and driven both a built springover Sierra and a built springunder Sierra that the suspension setup ultimately means squat, its a case of what works for the driver.
I have no doubt that if a gauntlet were laid down we'd have SPUA & SPOA rigs drive the same lines because in the end its a case of the driver making whatever the suspension setup is, work for him/her.

very well spoken steve. BTW which way would you go with your next rig?
Obviously SPUA has better stability, SPOA has better clearance and claimed wheel articulation, any other advantages?

If lets say SPOA with flat springs give 4 inches clearance, i'd have more than that to my "Special sills" I can make my own clearance.
Its SPUA for me, as i said when I built mine, stability and low COG were my 2 priorities.

The big thing with this whole spoa vs spua thing is in the past the majority of SPOA done were of very dubious quality and thought. A lot people though they were the only way to get lift to put 31s on and thus were the only way to do it. When done incorrectly they are a bad setup and do more harm than good. We can all agree on that, right?
Ok now for our situation ( the Suzi club guys in victoria) the terrain we drive we don't need the clearance or supposed added wheel travel a spoa provides. We like a low cog with traction for steep slippery climbs. By adding longer softer springs combined with guard cutting we have managed to fit 34" tyres without the need for SPOA.
horses for courses. Yes SPOA work well if they are done properly but so do spua. That was the crux of many of my arguments. people ask how do I lift a car to fit 33s and the first answer given seemed to be always "The only way to get them to fit is SPOA" and that is just not true.
If this sounds like a rant it isn't meant to be. Just trying to make sense of this thing so it doesn't appear like a forum battle between two trains of thoughts.

*This is not a value judgement*
More cars are built taller in NSW than in vic. (that applies the all cars, not just Zooks) I think that our terrain favours a lower car.
I vote with Grimbo (or was it bigsteve
) there is very little to be gained by comparing a SPOA car with a SPUA car, unless all other things were equal. even gearing etcetec.
Both setups can be made to work, and there will always be other variations, which brings us back to generalisations. SPUA will generally be lower, have less springwrap, steer better, and is cheaper (maybe), and SPOA is taller, has a higher COG, needs more work to get spot on and will has the potential to generate more compression travel, along with correspondingly short spring life.
depending on setup, two cars could run the same size tyre, be the same height and have the same travel, one SPOA, the other SPUA. The only major difference then would be that the SPOA car would have a higher COG. I this case on the track, far more difference would be made by the driver than anything else.
remember too that in 90% of cases, the setup you currently have will be the one you "prefer" because that is how you set your car up, so you will be unwilling to say you got it wrong.

Only reason i asked about a gauntlet is to put an end to the argument about SPOA vs SPUA. Seems to have worked, maybe, hopefully.

That pretty much sums it up. Build it the way you want it, don't be ignorant to other peoples advice and wheel it, don't leave it in the shed (sorry Grimbo not aimed at you), don't bag other peoples cars and don't make reference to military heritages

Hey Guys
Interesting topic, I havent read through it all, however, I'll put my 2 bobs worth in. I think that it is more than just SPOA Vs SPUA. Driver aside, It comes down to the person or group performing the modification. It's all great to say yeah I have this mad SPOA or SPUA or any other modification. But that mean shit if you didnt set it up properly (there are some dodgy zooks getting around and the owner have convinced themselves that their zook is the best).
There is no substitute for quality and experience when modifying your truck. Therefore, if you have invested in the quality and have the experience to set it up right, then you will shit on any dodgy buit zook!........Performance & handling is almost a direct relationship to setup quality.
I would be interested in knowing if others agree or disagree and why?

I agree, both spoa and spua both have their good and bad points, and both need to be set up properley to be any good...saying that, tho, for me, with very limited funds, tools and health, spua is much easier and cheaper to get right, in a home build situation (me cant weld at all, not blessed with that skill or equipment

Okay Along with Bigsteve I have had bothe abd now ride on coils.
I will say that the coils are leaps ahead of the otheres for comfort travel and stability.
As far as leaves for rockcrawling the SPOA was way better for clearance and travel and smothness of suspension operation.
As for just mud and high speed climbs then the SPUA was better for a bit more stability driveline reliability as the Axle rap was way less.
So in Summary I guess it comes down to what you like driving. But either way if they are not setup correctly then they are both Shiat to drive.

Gonads never shy's away from a challenge, in fact I am sure his response would be "Ahhh F!!!!!!!!!! yyeaaah I'm up up for some of that shiat".
At the end of the day he would agree that the performance of a zook, no matter what suspension it is, it comes down to who, how and what was used to set it up.
