in heavy dust they are goo d on a long trip as you can wash and reuse and keep your factory filter healthier

Those are sweet!

Could they TOTALLY replace the stock filter? I mean, I don't generally go through a lot of dust, and if I were, I can maintain them much more regularly...so what do you all think? Get them and ditch the stock one?

I wouldnt run them alone.

But if you want to ditch the stock filter, then buy an aftermarket washable one and use that. I think this is more a stopper for leaves and other stuff that goes down the snorkel as well as bigger dust particles.

I already have a K&Nc filter on my truck, but the thing is, there are around SIX contact points under the hood, and That can come down to 2 if I use this filter...

Try sealing up 6 points for water ingress that vibrate like mad!

use sikaflex for all the joints, i used the stuff to glue a broken gearbox mount together and its still going (two difficult 4x4 trips so far), best stuff

MC, dust still comes in when the snorkel head is around the other way, it just reduces it a bit in my opinion.

have used them on numerous outback trips & they save your main filter considerably, head up to UNI Filter & see Haden, he usually gives discounts to club members, even pick up some spare pre-oiled outers in sealed bags :cool: to through in the trail box.

Just ordered a set and will run them without the main K&N in order to minimize all that crap under the hood.

i thought about doing that too.

i was thinking of using the hat type pre filters. but i wanted to keep the air ram.

keep us updated on how they go dino.

is it possible to double them up if 1 isnt enough?

I also thought on putting two together...will see what comes out of it.

Any ways you guys can suggest I check that they are filtering right/enough without the main one as an indication?

Iv'e got some of those and spoke to unifilter about using it buy themselves and they said it's too coarse a foam to do that, all the different colours apperently have different filtering levels

To check if your filter is working,apply a film of grease inside an elbow after the filter and check it regularly for foreign matter

Thanks for the concern and the advice - will do that...

The Engine will be getting a HUGE overhaul by Christmas (www.lundengines.com), so until then we'll test things on it :D

I REALLY need to waterproof that V8i, so the Distributer is coming from D.U.I., and snorkl is there and everything has been sealed and breathers raised.

+ 3.5 V8is from the Lebanese Army (brand new) are like 750$, so fawk it :armsup:

My parents went to the cape in their Patrol but their friends went in a diesel hilux with one of those things in the snorkel.

It clogged up so bad that the suction from the engine caused the air intake pipes to distort and suck till they were almost flat, depriving the engine of air! Once it was removed, they had ne dramas.

It all comes down to maintenance I guess. You've just gotta keep your eyes on what's happening and do lots of thorough checks.

They dont look as cool, but donaldson cyclone pre-cleaners or equivalent are as good or better than most. Garrett also advertise a cyclone precleaner.

Dino, you are crazy running that without the factory filter. It is not designed to do that job. I am a filtration engineer so I should know a bit about it. I'm sure the snorkel filter sock is just designed to remove really large particles. Anything under 20 microns or so will probably go straight past the filter and into your engine. It probably won't cause any immediate problems but is likely to severely reduce the life of your engine.

Many years ago, Safari used to put a very coarse foam sock inside the top of hilux snorkels to try and damp the deafening inlet resonance they have. (2.8 D) When ours @ the time was tubocharged with a modified ARB kit, it sucked the foam sock through the shorkel. I was still concerned about large chunks loading up the snorkel, so I fitted flyscreen to the face of the ram. The car made 5kw more on the dyno with the FLYSCREEN removed. IMHO these snorkel socks will kill performance.

If you need prefiltering fit a donaldson precleaner. They will affect performance a little over a ram, but they work very well and manintainence is very easy- much easier to do on a trip than reoiling a sock. Many years ago, I saw a donaldson with a very neat sheetmetal ram scoop attached underneath it. Looked like the best of both worlds.

I don't think that turning a ram around will make very much difference to dust. @ speed, the area behind the ram will become a low pressure area, and just like the back window of a wagon, will become a dust magnet. Having it back to front certainly keeps leaves and mud out of it though.

PS a word about 'ram" heads and performance. I think if you could measure the airspeed in the inlet tract, you would see that it is far, far higher than roadspeed, so the effect of the ram will be very minimal.

I carried out lots of experiments with a N/A 2.8 Hilux, even making up a scoop that fitted up to the airconditioning hose holes hext to the radiator, probably picking up the highest pressure air in the car, with all 3" ducting into the aircleaner. Even then, the results were very hard to detect. It was very marginally better than stock over 90-100k, but otherwise undetectable.

PS i am a big fan of paper filters. generally, I find unifilters etcetc too much maintainance, although I have been quite impressed with others K&N filters.

They are pretty good as a first line fo defense in really dusty conditions but to use one without a main filter is IMHO is absolute madness. When taking the sock out after a day driving in dusty conditions, there is clear evidence of finer dust particles travelling though the foam and on to the second line of defense the main filter. You can normally pour the dust out of the middle. So they do stop 90% of the dust, but its the 10% that'll Fark ya motor

I can see that running without the main filter would provide some big benefits and hey what is there to loose. It's only your motor. Go For it

I just finished a 6 week trip to the Kimberley. I have a foam dual stage main filter and also took 3 precleaners (3 for $50). In the whole six weeks I celaned my main air cleaner once, and changed the pre cleaners every second day in the dust. IMHO the precleaners are well worth the $.
