Had a brief test drive in a 93 Defender TDi that had a "CLUNK" emenates from the bowels at takeoff.
Owner wasn't on hand to quiz.
What be it? CV joints ye thinks?

Rear A-Frame ball joint (most likely)
Uni-joints
Prop shaft slip joints
Suspension bushes (could be any or all of them)
Axles and/or drive flanges
Worn gearbox output shaft and/or transfer input gear (major problem on 200Tdi/LT77)
It is very unlikely to be the CV's.

I gather you can inspect any damage to the gear thru the PTO inspection cover? Otherwise big $ eh?

Yes you can inspect any damage/wear through the pto cover. You can also replace the gear through there. The problem is when the shaft is worn on the gearbox as it is the mainshaft. You would be looking at $2000+ to fix the box.

Chances are it will be something else other than the g/box or transfer.
