Bent Rear Axel In The Surf
I have discovered that the rear passenger axel is bent at the flange.
I have taken the brakes off and had the Surf in drive whilst jacked up. There is about 3 - 4 mm wobble in the flange plate.
Is this a common thing to happen or a combination or 10" rims, lockers and hard driving?

Defianatly. they are 5mm shorter. I just fitted a surf housing to my buggy and its 10mm wider than my IFS rear housing in my hilux.
I reckon 5mm shorter wouldn't be a problem. 5mm longer might jam up but 5mm shoter is neither here nor there.
if it's a real concern grab one from a 4runner.
or get down to your friendly toyota parts department and ask them nicely to look up the part numbers for the surf axle and the lux axle... might be surprisingly the same. might not be - but for 5mm extra length I don't reckon it's worth manufacturing a different part. the semi-floating wheel bearings can have almost 5mm axial slop when they're getting worn out.

not saying they maybe it is different.
it is ill put money on it. and id rather the full amount of spline in the centre rather than b 5mm short

As i said i just fitted a Surf coil housing to the rear of my buggy. The housing is 10mm longer than the IFS leaf Housing and the Axles are also 5mm longer each. This i am absolutly certain of as i used the axles from my IFS leaf housing in the surf coil housing as they are modified to suit the disc brake rear i removed from my hilux. I need to cut 5mm from both rear axles to re-fit the diff centre in the hilux.
Also the brake backing plates are totaly different as the surf runs 2 individual hand brake cables.
Find a surf coil axle. Its not going to be hard they are more common then the Hilux IFS rear housing.

Geez, dude, relax! - I said I didn't know but wouldn't be surprised either way, and that it probably wouldn't matter.
If it's that important I'll do the maths to calculate the engaged spline shear area as a proportion of the axle shaft shear area for both scenarios to see whether or not it matters. I'm quite happy to prove myself wrong but my spidey sense says it won't matter.
I'll go grease up my calculator...

you need to shorten your already 5mm shorter axles to fit a diff centre that is identical to the diff centre they came from even though it is the housing that is different?
like I said, I wouldn't be surprised either way. if they're longer, they're longer, no surprise.

How much do i need to Explain? Im not taking a guess. I measured them less than a week ago
I have 2 rigs. One is a Tube Buggy. One is a Hilux.
I just removed the motor,Both ARB Airlockers in centres and both rear axles and Disc Brakes from the hilux these have all been fitted to the tube buggy.
I have used a Surf Coil sprung rear housing in the Buggy which was complete when i bought it. I removed the centre from it along with the axles.
Im now fitting the Coil rear centre and axles into the IFS Hilux leaf rear housing which is fitted to the hilux and in order to do this i need to cut down the axles by 5mm.
Dont be surprised because they are longer.
The shorter axles will be perfectly fine however they are harder to find than the correct ones and involve a lot more work. Im using the shorter axles in my coil housing and have no concernes as to the strength.

Alex, rather than have the face machined, which will require the brake backing plate to be pressed off and on again etc it would be much cheaper and easier to just get another axle from a Surf or coil 4Runner as they are the same and are plentiful.
It is also possible that you axle could be very slightly bent up the shaft and machining the face is no cure as it will eventually brake.

Thankx for the replys. Been ringing all the wreckers around. I was told that there are 2 sizes in the 4runner axels. Depending on what size brake drum I have (standard or SR5) depends on what axel I need as there are 2 different bearing sizes. Anyone heard of this?
Looks like it going to be a pull the axel out and go visit the wreckers with the sample. Bugger.

East Coast 4x4 Wreckers actually imports parts from Japan. Scored a replacement axel (off a Surf) complete with drum backing plate, near new pads and slave for $110.
Just have to undo the brake line, swap , swap and done. Well it will be on Saturday.
