I'm new to 4wd, but having gone on few trips i have found a new way of life.
Can anyone give me suggestion on a 4wd to buy, any modifications to get etc that i could do with about $5000.

Yeh you could deffinately find a good zook for that money...
ie -
Zook (Wide Track 1.3l) - $4000
Body Lift - DIY $100
Rims - F100 - $150
Tyres (2nd Hand) - $ 300 - 400
Extra cash to fix anything if needed!

Sure I had alot of the stuff here allready but when ya put ya mind to it anything is posiable.
The main thing to really consider is "where" you intend to go with the rig........
Will it be moded a bit or heaps or left as std ?
Is there family or mates to carry around?
Do you need a more comfy ride ?
Do you need extra space for gear ( fishing, camping, hunting, passengers shyte)
Do you need to tow anything ?
What are ya mates driving and will it keep up ?
How much fuel are you prepared to buy a week in order to drive it !
Can you do the mechanicle stuff yourself ? or
Will you have to PAY some-one to do it all ?
answer them and you'll soon see a pattern of what you need over the less important of what you want !

Long/Short/Mid Wheel Base. 2/4 door. Petrol/Diesel. Manual/Automatic.
Hopefully the correct vehicle will be evident.
Personally, I ended up with a 79 Rangie with 4.4 P76 engine, dual fuel, sill tanks, suspension lift, 31x10.5s, flares, electronic ignition, rear wheel carrier & jerry can holder for $2500
Admitedly, I have spent a fair bit of time underneath it (and inside) fixing up the things that were broken/breaking, but it was a bargain, and hasn't realy cost a lot of money to fix.
The Zook option is a good start.
Light, will go anywhere, lots of potential for expansion. Doesn't tow well (anything big), and is not a fast pace setter, but good economy.
If you are mechanically minded, then seek out the old ratty vehicle, and restore it to an acceptable level.
They are out there, you just have to be patient.

99% of the stuff required could be sourced from the forsale section at realitivly cheap prices........
Really a fantastic idea to start with something like this unit, it will teach you all you'll need to know as you fix it up and then theres the pride of driving something you built from the ground up.
This again comes down to where you invisage your going with 4x4 driving and your abilities as a mechanic and the time you have or have not to do such work.

would also think about a 60 series, you can buy a decent one for around 5000 being an older model 60 diesel so its cheap on fuel, parts are generally cheap and easy to modify just do a 2 inch body lift for like 60 bucks and then chuck on some 33s and it will be a capable truck and you can take your mates out

I think that the intended use thing is very important. I think you shuld clarify what you want and need to do with the car before you ask for ideas, also, how much mechanical ability do you have? some cars are cheap becuse they are expensive to work on.
If the car need to be daily driven around town and parked on the street, with daytrip use I would go for a zook, Hard top, ideally. ( soft tops are better inthe bush, but are not as practical due to leaks/theft risk.) A zuk(sierra) will get you the newest car for the money, and the highest likelyhood of road only kays, so you are less likely to be buying someone else's hack.
If you are handy with the tools and need or want to do longer trips, or need to carry more than 1 passenger, you will want something bigger.
I think it is also worth taking into account that the bigger cars such as MQ's and 60 series, whilst cheap to buy, will be more expensive to maintain than a zuk.
Additionally, Zuks are cheaper to build a more capable car out mostly becuse you get more capability out of a smaller tyre on a zuk. i.e a zuk on 31's with one locker will generally have ample ability for most trips, even up against bigger cars with much more money spent on them.
Therefore, if it is toy, i;d go zuk.

If interested I have a 83 swb mq for sale comes with 12 months rego tyres have 5000kms on them since new 31x10.5x15, fibreglass flares 280Kkms on clock, gearbox bearings replace 40Kkms ago wheel bearings replaced then as well, just adjusted front ones to pass rego, rear springs replaced dec 03, cb, just replaced front leaf spring bushes, massive alloy bull bar, valve timing advanced slightly, comes with home made soft top (not the best but does the job) some rust in rear wheel arches but only minor, comes with workshop manual which covers everything. as for price
