ideas for protection of starter motor on GQ

ok guys

i got my starter rebuilt recently coz the internals were all stuffed and burnt out of something, anyway, put a reco'd one in the car and it was fine for a few weeks until recently.

i starts doing what it was doing before, doesnt want to start and takes ages to turn over or doesnt turn over at all, and it does it real slow.

i tried a few things to fix the problem that the auto elec said but none of them worked.

i brought it down to him last night for him to have a look, and he has looked at the starter and the internals are stuffed again, only after about 4-5 weeks.

He said the armiture was the main cause and you cant buy one separately, u have to buy a new starter.

He did some calls, and the prices ranged between 450-900 brand new!

just wondering with the occasional bug bashing i do, whether it is worth getting the new one, or just buying a second hand one incase i destroy it and take my chances.

Do many people out there have problems with a starter motor in their GQ?

Also wondering if i get the $450 one, if it will be as good as the say the $900 one?

i can get my original 181 refunded or soemthing like that and put it towards the new one to make it around $260 for the cheapest new one, which i think he said comes with 2 year warranty also

What are your thoughts and suggestions?

also it couldnt have been the mud to destroy it again, as i have only been on 3 easy trips with not much mud

$260 sounds cheap with 2r warranty.. Id go with that.

$450 still aint bad. You could go another used one, and have it die again in days/weeks/mths etc.. not worth blowing the cash on.

Try and make some form of tin cover/guard for it to stop mud gettin in. Dont know where the crap would be gettin into the starter, its pretty much sealed all round...

then be smart.. dont drive in the mud. OR at least air-proof the bellhousing to prevent mud goin in there again with silicone. Places to check are the clutch boot, plastic pin under bellhousing for drainage, and the starter goin on.

Once sealed properly you have a slightloy better chance of water/mud ingress.

Nothing covers MUD danage.
Its the risk you take. You dint have to do it.

Its all part of the Cost of 4 wheeling. Turned a lot away who thought this stuff/sport was cheap.

Id take the new one on offer and remove it after a heavy session to ensure its clean if it worries you.

make sure you clean everything after a mud run, even to the point of taking the starter motor off and giving it a good clean. As bogged said make a splash guard up to try and protect it.

I'd say go with a new one as you will then know it is 1005 to start with. If it has a 2 year warranty then you should be ok if the same problem happens again.

have you also had your wiring checked, are you having any other electrical problems? Could be other issues that are manifesting themselves in the starter

i just spoke to the auto elec, it is only a 12 month warranty, i thought he said 2 years.

i have gone ahead with the new one.

i asked asked whether it was original caused by mud damage, but he said that the brushes and something else had just burnt out and wrecked the armiture whcih you cannot buy that part separately.

also he said there was a little bit of water inside somewhere which he said it probably didnt mean anything.

so it will be finished hopefully today and tomorrow morning, so i will think of a few methods to try and cover it.

any other ideas anyone?

Funny thing, last few trips Ive been on Ive come out clean car, others have looked like they have done the rainforest challenge.. we were on same trip, and same tracks...

do you classify vic range as drowing the car in mud, or a deep bog hole like the once in the pic, or both?

There is a guard on ebay at the moment.Being stuck in mud for a while would cause problems but quick recoveries should keep things cheap.

the only thing i could find in the 4wd accessories section was a splash guard for a land rover, is this what u meant? if not, can u please post a link.

um i went and got stuck and burried in mud and water plenty of times with my 4.2 pet and i have never replaced a starter motor on it i reakon you might have a electrical problem maybe your ignition is getting stuck for a bit not sure also i will have a look around tomorrow i might still have the starter motor lying around after my conversion if i find it i will let you know and you can have it

I'm not sure about the TB42, but the TD 42's starter motor, on the front end cap of the motor itself, there is a small vent on the bottom of the casing to let any moisture/water out of the end-cap. Normally this vent faces down but 'may' have been installed the wrong way up and facing up not letting any water out. Its possible to VERY CAREFULLY tap the hole out and put a fitting with a breather there. When re-assembling, make sure the cap is re-sealed to the motor body with sealant.

I've only destroyed starters after filling the bellhousing with crap due to the clutch boot being no good. Clutch went funny for a few months too, had to be hosed out weekly and made some noises.

Who told you that, I wouldn't believe what just one auto eleccy thinks. Try ringing ashdowns and quote the starter motor serial number and they will tell you what you can and can't get. I get all my alternator and starter motor stuff through them and sometimes half the cost of other places. I do get trade price though.

I recently rebuilt my starter motor myself with new clutch and brushes, bearings. The whole lot was under 100 from memory. It was full of crap and the plug thing on the underside was blocked right up. I now make it a habit of getting in there with a piece of wire or something and unblocking the hole to let water drain out. Its amazing how quickly it gets blocked. If you decide doing this job yourself at some time i would suggest doing it when due for an oil change as getting those filters out of the way makes it a whole lot easier.

Yeah the problem with starters is the breather hole/holes.
They will take a dunking in clean water (say a river crossing) and drain & dry out ok. It's the muddy water that stuffs em the water drains out and leaves the silty shit behind.
I've heard stories of guys using 2 tubes of silicon to totally seal their starters, don't know how long they'd last though.
I can get El Cheepo ones brand new for the Jabber for $300Ea I'm on my 2nd one in 4 years so thats not too bad for the mud I drive. It is just a fact of life down here.........................
