hi everyone im new to 4x4ing and am just about to buy a 1998 sr5 dual cab 2.7 petrol. i was wondering will it matter if its petrol for off roading? i have no real intention of doing creek crossings. correct me if im wrong, but the reason 4x4 are diesel are for going in water cause there is not much electronics to stuff up when the get water on them????????? also can anyone give me or point me in the direction on some info for the 2.7 petrols.

thats one of the reasons.
another reason is diesels generally have better low down tourque for crawling and of course the economy factor.
a petrol is still capable of doing creek crossings just noithing that will flood the entire engine bay with water. If you do you will need a air compressor, rag and a can of 5-56 handy
There's nothing wrong with petrol motors for 4wding. They can be waterproofed to an extent where your car would probably float away should the water get that deep. I wouldn't be too concerned. But I wouldn't purposely be driving through rivers either.

i have a 2.7l petrol in my 00 lux.
i had a snorkel fitted because i'm paranoid
deepest water i've been through was about headlight height (murray crossing so it's a reasonable amount of time in the water)
went thru with no problems at all, didnt even start to run rough
i have however wet the plugs when washing the engine bay
easy fix with some wd40.
petrol goes well on the highway - sits on 120 all day and avgs around 12-13l/100k's.
don't let the diseasel pushers get to you
