Fuel tank question/ EFI Engines
Well as some of you know, I am swaping in a 1ggze EFI engine into my lux. Now I need to sort the fuel system.
Now the standard go is a lift pump, surge tank, high pressure pump as my lux has only the simple diesel set up atm.
Could I use a v6 hilux tank, or another EFI hilux tank that would have the pump as an integral part of the lux? And if so, whats there shape etc compared to my 84 single cab lux?
If so, anyone know price, availability of such items?

Yes, you could use a V6 hilux tank, as there would be quite a sufficient swirl pot (inbuilt surge tank) built into the tank already. Another option is either of the 2 90L tanks out of a V6 prado...
The external pump/s / surge tank idea is very reliable and quite simple to build tho....also helps if the bottom of the surge tank is level or lower than the bottom of the fuel tank, and if possible, try not to make the pressure pump, pump fuel "uphill"

I too am interested to know about this.
So would it be easier to swap in a tank from an EFI car (make/weld brackets, etc.) or make a surge tank and run the appropriate pumps, lines etc?
I have a 120L long rangie in my lux so the idea of a prado 90L unit is very appealing. I would guess it's a matter of finding one though and seeing if it fits anywhere. Are there any other similar tanks of decent size that might be easier to get hold of?
Cheers.

Ive been told on the 3.8L V6 to just use a length of larger diametre fuel line upstream of the high pressure pump which acts like a resevoir of sorts. Im told even in offroad applications with this that the engine doesnt starve. Hell Beebee was running his lux at PUOSU with a standard tank with no baffles.
Right. I run a 1g-geu in an 84 Surf.
Before I pulled it to bits and converted it to coils I did nearly 50 000km using the standard tank and fuel lines (mine was a 2LT) no surge tank.
I never had any problems with fuel starvation even on the steepest of hills. All I did was pull the tank and flush it out with petrol, bolted it back in, plumbed the efi fuel pump in line.
Now that I coiled it I can't use the standard fuel tank cos the A frame is in the way, I'm looking at using a Suzuki Escudo tank and will be running a surge tank, I'm also running a fuel pump out of a 3ltr VL commodore for the efi and a Subaru electric pump for the surge tank.
I do have a question..... Why should the bottom of the surge tank be lower than the bottom of the fuel tank?

Where the f#@k did that come from
I built a surge tank for my hilux with comm v6.
My local wreckers has $75 all you can carry on saturday. So I got most of the major bits for the setup from there.
# Electric fuel pump of a sigma (or any carby 4cyl.)
# Inline fuel injection pump off any holden camira/commodore
# VN commodore air con condensor vessel (approx 100mm diam and 200 long)
I cut the body off the a/c vessel for the body of my surge tank and turned up an ally top form a piece of plate 10mm thick. Drilled and tapped for 1/4 BSP inlets in the plate and got it tig welded on the top. Silver soldered a pick up tube that sits about 30mm off the bottom of the tank.
Plumbed the pick up from the main tank to the elec fuel pump (transfer pump) into the the surge tank and the overflow back to the main tank. Ran a 1/2 inch hose from the pick up in the surge tank to the inlet of the in line EFI pump, and the outlet to the fuel rail. The return from the fuel rail back to the surge tank.
I did this from the start so never had a surge problem, but I know Wally had a surge problem with his 80 UTE which was solved by a similar set up.
All up cost was about $150 installed (by myself) and a lot cheaper and just as good as the Marks equivelant at $480 or so.
PM me for further info or drawings if needed.

Bought a complete race grade setup for $150. 2 Litre surge tank, fittings, pumps the lot.
Thanks for the info peoples!

Second hand, but you would be able to tell. Its all in perfect condition/clean etc. Dude wrapped his toyota sports car round a tree and was selling everything he could off it cheap. Braided hose etc..
Looks cool!
