i have a Landcruiser fj62 and i want to know what would be the best seat to get that is good for on and off road. what kind of seats are out there what are some brand names?

I'll say it one more time. you need to clarify what best means to you then we can give you an indepth answer.
But as to brands to look for.
recaro, Sparco, Parateus are a couple I can think of. they offer everytype from basic drivers seats with improved padding and bolsters to full on racing style seats. Budgets will match. Other wise you can use seats from other vehicles sometimes for improvements over standard

SAAS in melbourne do all types of seats i had bucket race seats in my little LC torana .Pretty good on to order thru i did have a problem getting delivered but this was the courier (mcphee ) with changeing seat remember you may need to get new runners or mod you existing one`s to fit,best to try and remount in origional holes

best idea go to places like revolution race gear sit in a few seats and work out what shape suits you think about how easy they are to get in and out of from a lower position IE climbing into your truck not siting down into like in a sports car
once you have an idea of the basic shape seat that you want then look through the catle dogs and limit your choices that way

have ajustable back, ajustable lumber support & ajustable side wing thingys
look around it all depends on your size weight & wat will fit into your car
its no use trying to fit an air ride seat from a mack truck into a mini

I have had a pair of Sparco Sprint race seats in my G for years. They are road legal, having a steel frame.
Whilst a fixed back shouder supperot race seat might be a bit uncompromising for some, I reckon they are the best money I have ever spent on my car, and cannot reallt see the point in spending heaps more for a reclining seat that I will never use. ( i;m not one to talk though, my seats are not even on runners)
Most people would write off a non reclining seat immediately for a general use car, but I prefer the increased security you get with a fixed seat as there is far more support around the hip area. I also have the seatbelt running though the harness holes at hip point.
My wife has a lumbar pad velcroed in place on her side, and swaps it over if she is driving.
Some cars are better suited to non reclining seats than others. Generally, car with "tall" doors such as cruisers and defenders are better to get in and out of with a race seat than cars with shallow doors like most of the japanese utes such as hiluxes etc.
Generally, you will find a knack to getting in to them, and find it no big deal after a while.
IMHO I do not like/trust the construction of many of the seats that are sold through mjor auto accessory chains. Mates that have had these seats have tended to find that the cushions slip, recliner mechanisms fail and develop lots of slop and they are often an "odd" fit - very very tight in some areas and lacking support in others etc.
I too would check out revolution racegear, otherwise Roman Autotek for Recaro.

Chris it is just a matter of poking around down at the wreakers and seeing what you can find. The most comfy seat for me is a $800 Recaro that looked bland as. It was sitting at work for so long and when the place shut I had the chance of getting it for next to nothing, didn't and am kicking myself ever since
That aside my fav cheap ones are N13 SSS one just cause they fit my fram really well. It won't take all that long to have a look around and sum up in your own mind what you like the feel of

Still looking for slim-line suspension seat bases (like on a trucks driver seat only not as bulky) and if so who is making/importing them. Yeah I know it is soft but at least I would be a comfortable softy

they have electonic base thingy that allows me 2 tilt the seat foward or back 2 suit, but i have only ever used it once wen i first put them in, it also has pump up lumbar support, (which i find very good wen in the rought stuff), and the side things can b wound in or out 2 hold u in the seat more...
very happy wif them prolly one of the top things in the mods list that i have done, if u cant b comfortable then it just aiint worth it

My understanding is that in vehicles with "shallow" bodies such as hilux's and similar, there is just not enough height between the floor and the bottom of the seat to allow for enough travel. I think you will need about 6" to get a suspension base in there.
I believe that ARB played around with suspension bases and found that they couldn't retain ADR approval because the seat will always end up a fair bit higher.
Toyota and mitsubishi had suspension seats in the mid 80's, and these were pretty tall, I think at least 200mm.
