which winch should I keep ????

Post by V8Patrol »

I have a Warn 9000XLD fitted up to the Patrol and it works fine but has seen a lot of action.......

I have been offered a 8000lb HighMount that has just been fully rebuilt as a clean swap for my 9000lb lowmount.....

The reason he wants my lowmount is for his rig ( Mitsubishi) and this unit has a bar that will only take a lowmount.....

should I accept or decline ????????

Considering that the rig weighs nothing close to that much, and i doubt youll ever get THAT stuck, i would be taking the newly rebiult one if it fits.
Youll have a winch you know will last, and if a 8000 pounder wont pull ya out i doubt a 9000 pounder will, a 1000 pound more ain gonna make much difference......

Highmounts are way more bling :D :D :D

Plus (and I may well be wrong here) I am under the impression they've got a more powerful engine, but (in the case of 8000 vs 9000) lower gearing - so highmounts go faster - especially the red ones.

I keep reading that synthetic ropes shouldn't be used on a low mount?

Personally i would go the high mount, they are quicker and hold more cable. But a few things to consider:

1. Will your bar take the high mount? if no, get out the grinder get the high mount
2. Are you planning of doing any comps? if yes high mount if no get it anyway
3. want a more relaible winch? get the high mount
4. want respect? get the high mount

If you don't want it tell your mate i'll swap him for my 12 month old low mount (9500lb)

Low mount winches will heat the drum more than a high mount because the brake is in proximity to the drum rather than separate in the case of a highmount.

however, it is my understanding the drum only really gets hot if powering out, as this is when the brake is dragging. If you rarely ever power out, it whould not be a problem.

Also, there are some grades of synthetic rope that will take more heat too.

I'd better clear up a couple of things first.....

My winch ( lowmount) has seen better days....man I have I worked this puppy hard.

The HiMount is FULLY REBUILT and hasnt been used since the rebuild !

The lowmount cable has 4 kinks

The highmount has a new cable !

The bullbar is comming OFF and a new one will be built to take either the Hi or Low mount ( which ever I decide to go with )

The current bullbar will be either sold or used on another patrol here.

The new bullbar will have a much better entry angle, will be higher, will be closer to the radiator, will replace the front panel and have built in indicators/parkers.

The alloy side rails ( Nurfbars) will be removed and rock sliderz will be fitted instead, These sliderz will incorperate a "step" and a "side rail" into the design.

The front guards will be cut to allow better clearance for the 38" swampers, the rear 1/4s will be cut beyond what most ppl belive is acceptable

Am I going to comp the rig ??????

FARK YEAH !

but I have a long way to go before that day comes round

what it will end up looking like ( bar for the color )

lowmount 20kgs lighter in the most important part of the cars balance.

i have seen many a shiat winch """"rebuild""" :?

lowmounts suck to mount as they don't fit between the chassis rails (on a gq anyway)- highmounts do!

i chose a hs9500 instead of a highmount for weight saving for rockcrawling and short course. but i will get both now for the obc.
what comps are you doing - 38"s too big for winch challange style highmount comps.

still how can you pass up a highmount.

motor size is important - both 4.6's.
does the highmount have freespool - the old ones don't.

cheers bru

Have heard a rumour that the new 6hp motors are only about $300 compared to $700+ for a 4.6hp.

Go the highmount (just pull it apart for a quick look before putting it on).
