landcrusier 4 speed whine

landcrusier 4 speed whine
got a whine in the gearbox, sounds like a jet engine speeding up, only in 3rd and 4th gears, worst is when coming off the throttle, followed by medium acceleration. hard accelleration it's barely noticable, and holding constant speed isn't heard at all.
dad says dry bearing... anyone else got an opinion?
and how much would i be looking at for a second hand 4 speed if this one decides to destroy itself while i'm driving

Have you removed gearbox before?
Depending what model you can support the box while bolts undone and roll car in neutral to get in there. Min eis BJ42 and there is a crossmember that makes it a bit tough. Also I have used timber slats and heavy rope to cradle from the cab down as well as jack underneath.
In any case is hard going.
Is there any noise difference when you engage clutch?

by those symptoms it actually sounds more like a collapsed pinion bearing on the diff. get under there and with the transmission in neutral, handbrake off (fit wheel chocks to stop it rolling), see if there is any up-down/left/right movement of the diff pinion flange. it doesn't take a lot of slop to make the diff very whiney.
second test - drop the rear tailshaft out, take it for a drive on the front diff, and see if the noise is the same,differnt,gone. if the noise is the same, it's probably the transfer case, possibly the gearbox. if the noise is gone, rear diff for sure.
if the noise does not change foot on/off clutch, it is not the clutch release or spigot bearings.
in a shorty it's hard to distinguish diff noises from gearbox noises, the noise is transmitted up the tailshaft and through the sticks into the cabin, sounds like it is coming from the box.

sorry to hijack your thread Bad religion.. i am having a similar problem. i have replaced the rear diff, it was totally cactus.. and now i can hear something else. it sounds like the gearbox (or an F111 jet fighter), but gear change is good (for a 30 yo truck).. tho i found out yseterday engaging low range is a pig, but it stays there. my noise disapears when the clutch pedal is depressed... so could that be clutch guys?.. or is it just taking pressure from the transfer case.. which i have been told is more likely the culprit than the gear box??????

I second the pinion diff bearing prob - i had the same problem with mine, i swore it was the transfer, but after removing the tailshaft the noise went away, and sure enough there was a dud bearing. The bearing was still fully intact, the rollers and the outer race were covered in tiny pits, and when you spun the bearing in your hand you coul here it rumble. I can't remember if there was much play at the pinion, but the best indication of that is when you cruise along ( not accel or deccelarating) at about 80+, and get a vibration in the drive train that goes away once you accel or deccel.
Defintely check that bearing.

hmm.. all gears.. accell steady and decel.. seems to pause when foot taken off accel pedal. starts around 15kph i guess... and only when moving. havent really gone any speed in LR yet... only crawling.. so havent noticed.

from that description I would think the noise is coming from the transfer case, probably the idler shaft bearings as they always seem to be the weak link which is part of the reason the idler shaft design sees upgrades over the years. hard to tell without pulling it all apart of course. if the noise doesn't bother you too much, turn the stereo up and live with it - it won't let go for a long time and it's not worth the cost of rebuilding it especially if the idler gear needs re-sleeving (it probably will).

it's not the rear diff, i just replaced it and that got rid of my rumble under throttle, i hada colapsed pinion bearing... but the whine is still there. it only does it with the clutch depressed when i am shifting, ie it'l roll fine in gear with the clutch depressed, but when i change gears it makes the noise.
started doing it occasionally in 2nd, and it seems to be worse when decelerating... but i'm thinking i'l turn the stereo up and put up with it.
