Has anybody got any figures for fuel consumption of a fully laden (up to legal max) 1997 discovery with a 3.9L V8. Im wanting to do a kimberley trip with my father before he gets to old . Problem is I don't have the funds to get a diesel so i'm thinking of just bitting the bullet and taking the discovery (with some long range tanks of course).
Trading is not an option because the condition of the disco is unbelievable with only 68k kms on the clock and since we've had it since new I know all its problems etc.

Our 95 3.9 auto does 18-22l/100km fully loaded & towing a 6 x 4 trailer on the highway.
Thats on LPG, petrol is about 10% better.
Double that for low range work (our worst was 29ltrs for 68km lpg)
We carry 90 lt ulp & 70 lt lpg and have a safe highway range of only about 700 km ( and lots less offroad)

might make sense up there as I imagine ulp is not available everywhere

it's got do with REVs sometimes kicking it back to 3rd (ZF AUTO) even thou it's reving higher the engine isn't labourinmg so it uses less fuel... but then too many REVs... you know how the storey ends...

Adding to what mickrangie said, wind resistance is a function of velocity squared. So comparing wind resistance at 110k/hr to 90k/hr gives 110^2 / 90^2 = 1.49. Then wind resistance is 49% greater at 110k/hr.
Unleaded can be hard to get in some remote communities (to combat petrol sniffing), many only have avgas and diesel, so you might want to investigate this aspect where you plan to travel.

Well we're planning to do the kimberlies and I've been reading up on it. Apparently Gibb River Road recieves 20,000 visitors a year so I'm guessing most of the fuel stations will stock unleaded in the tourist season. This is something we will check up on before obviously. No probs for my old man but because he'll have his brand new 3.0L turbo diesel patrol.
I also plan getting the twin 50L sill tanks which should give me a theoretical on highway range of 1042km going by our average fuel consumption figures. So hopefully 500km low range which should get us between stops.
One intersting not though is that a patrol wagon can legally only hold around 500kg of cargo where as a discovery can take about 800kg. This is an interesting aspect as by the time recovery gear, water camping gear, etc is loaded your looking at over 500kg. Neither of us want to tow a trailer either so we gonna have to come up with something.
