Yep extractors and bigger exhaust. Stick with 2 1/2", 3" will loose you torque, been there, done that, went back to 2 1/2" for the tail pipe section and worked heaps better, also heaps quieter, the 3" will give you the shits after a while. You can also advance the pump timing, which gives you some good low end grunt, but makes the engine a little smoky. These mods will make it pull heaps better down low, and will make the engine rev a bit freer (how do you spell that?)

with regards to exhaust, If I was thinking adding Turbo in few monthes would I get 3 inch or still stick with 2 1/2.

well I have a 2.5 inch with my turbo setup and it is good enough...much better than a stock 2h with no turbo.
I spose it depends on how the pipe is bent. If you are going press bent, get a 3 inch system, if you are getting mandrel bends, a 2.5 will do. Press bending distorts the pipe and you loose internal diameter, thus it becomes more restrictive. Mandrel bends will cost more, and not all work shops have a mandrel bending machine.

i thaught mandrel bends were just they weld in mandrel bent sections for each bend rather than actually bending it. or is this for stainless only?

Depends on the size of the turbo, 3" would probably be overkill on a 2H with a small turbo. Its kinda like the factory 80s with 3", sounds great, but hardly worth the extra $ for 3" over 2 1/2". Some of the aftermarket turbos are a bigger capacity, and therefore benifit from a larger exhaust, but the Toyota ones are too small. If it will be a new kit, see what the manufacturer/installer recommends.
Some shops have a mandrel bending machine, but most buy in the bends and weld them in. You can loose 20-25% volume (not diameter) without mandrel bends. IE: cross section of 3" pipe = 7.065 sq. in. sqaush that pipe in a bend down to 2 2/3" = 5.58 sq. in. or 21% loss of volume, but only around 11% loss of diameter. Or the other way around 2 1/2" = 4.9 sq. in., so a 3" has a 44% larger volume. That's a lot more air flow !

I made a 3" system 15yrs ago,Im just about to replace it with 3" again(worn out).What I do is buy straight pipe and a 3" donut cut wedges out of the donut weld to the pipe,I then have 3" from start to finish.Cost about $65 for donut & $20-30 for pipe.If you don't have a mig cut all the bits tape together to check it all fits,consider if you need joins for installation then get someone to weld it up.An exhaust shop should do it. I'm considing a turbo but with 300,000 kms not sure allthough I've done all the k's and motor is in good nik.

I found that a snorkel helped a bit when on the highway, sort of forcing a bit more air in. But Turbo it asap, you'll wonder why you never did it sooner. The 2H is a great engine and has a modest amount of torque but it vastly improves with a hairdryer. If you do get extractors for it in the mean time, don't throw away your standard manifold, it can be used with an adapter for your turbo when you decide to fit it. That's how mine was set up and it worked very well and wasn't too expensive to set up either.Bazz107 wrote:Hi,

Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.
Another way to get more power, but just as expensive as a turbo is to re gear the diffs. If you can handle a few hundred more revs on the highway it's a good way to get more torque and pulling power.
Probably the easiest way to kill the power on a 2h is bigger rubber, so compensate with gears, and then some more.
I weren't aware of any cams for the 2h. Seems like a waste of time for an engine that doesn't go over 3000 often.

Two and a half inch is enough for a 2h turbo. If you can get a good price on mandrel do it but otherwise ordinary "crush" bends are fine. We are talking about sub 150hp motors! Don't waste your money on new extractors. Bj on roids spent some $$$ on a 2h turbo cams porting etc etc he said it wasn't worth the hassle. 12ht head won't go on a 2h. Get a 12ht if you want more than 110rwhp but a worn out 12ht will sell for $3000

The turbo will provide the backpressure and the reasoning behind a 3" exhaust is to get the hot exhaust gasses away as fast as possible so there is the least amount of heat hanging around the dump pipe and turbo,
Saying that if the dump pipe is only 2.5 inch theres not much point in going 3" past that.
