IMO, a 4.2TD GU is probably the best strength wise straight out of the box. Got strong axles and CV's, monster gearbox and the motor is so damn old there's not much to worry about.
Suzuki Sierra. They extremely well built vehicles that are very hard to break in stock configuration. They can be punished quite severly yet seem to take the bashing well. Cheap to buy, cheap parts easy to work on and modification potential is huge.
Maybe clarify a bit more with an end use/usage as this will make some big differences in the answers given
Paj with the monococh chassis is riggid. Mine has had a good workout.

Mercedes G300DT.... The real boxy one...only does about 105kph flat out but comes with the lowest factory crawl ratio ( I think ) and factory diff locks.
We have two of these however they are trucks. Too big to take anywhere but the beach and the rampover angle is woeful. If we are going to include real trucks then why not look at the Isuzu 4wd truck range?
I personally love the Terios tv ad. You know how they have Pajeros and whatever else scaling cliffs and doing high speed rock work with Suburus. We all know it is advertising crap. However on the Terios ad they show it being squeezed into a tight parking spot and then with a mischiveous look to his female passenger the driver moves it one car length forward onto some sand. As if!! Advertising crap

For live axle rigs overall a GU would have to be the strongest.
But a Defender chassis looks bloody beefy I gotta admit, pity about the rest of it though.
Ford F250 ain't far behind either in outright strength.
For IFS a Gen 2 93-99 3.5 V6 or 2.8 TDI Jabber for drivetrain strength.
