85' Rocky SP

Post by r0ck_m0nkey »

Was digging through some old photo's and come across dads old 85' Rocky SP. Daihatsu's best 4WD produced.

For the info, this is the basic spec's from memory.

1985 SWB Hardtop
2.8L Turbo Diesel
Recaro Interior featuring LS Front seats and matching trim throughout.
Ultimate Suspension Springs, and Decarbon Shocks. (not 100% sure on this but dad's did)
As far as aware only came in a Gunmetal Grey like colour, with striping (apart from Daihatsu's race vehicles)

No idea how many were actually sold or how many even exist, but it was built primarily as a Homologation vehicle for Daihatsu to compete in offroad racing for events such as the then Wynns Safari. I did once have a Bushdriver Magazine featuring a Road Test of one, but the magazine is long gone, so can't scan it.

The one dad owned was one of the ones Daihatsu raced which also featured in most of their magazine ads of the time featuring ROCKY1 plates.

Just thought i would throw that all in purely for interests sakes and if anyone even knew that they existed.

Surprise surprise i didnt bump into this thread.
Yeah i too wonder if this brand still do exist? Coz i believe back in the 80s and the early 90s they were the biggest aftermarket brands with it's next biggest rival ARB.
But then i wonder what happen to it after the 90s?

I got my license 2 years ago and recently started offroading in my dad's Rocky. So out of curiousity i too tried to do a search and couldnt find anything about it.

Btw my Rocky runs an Ultimate Supension leafspring and used to have DeCarbons which were replaced some time back for a set of Gabriel Ryders. And my dad's Rocky was also used for developing the leafsprings. Went through a few experimental sets to suit our local Malaysian conditions. And yes they were made in Malaysia. So far the springs are in excellent conditions considering they are a good 15 years old or more. My dad was the original distributor for Ultimate Suspension in Malaysia but passed the whole company setup to a friend due to other business commitments.
So that makes it 2 ppl on the board that used them.
My RIG sucks big time.
