GQ EFI Conversion

Post by LOCKEE »

Who has done one?

Planning mine at the moment. No Turbo. Don't want in car adjustability, just more efficency.

Have factory EFI Manifold and Pump/Sender Unit.
Using Commodore computer redone by Kalmaker
Commodore Harness and sensors, ignition module. Maybe Throttle Body.
Modifying Dizzy to suit.

Thoughts?

Ideas?

Wouldn't it be simpler to run a factory patrol computer and loom?

Why use the commodore setup?

Commodore Computer is programable, cheap and most workshops can plug into it. The loom and sensors are cheap and available anywhere. Can add all the wiring in one seperate lom to the carby wiring rather than swapping whole expensive Nissan EFI Loom.

Also if I do go silly and do more mods we can reprogram on the dyno.

I will get you a set of castor bushes. Need to keep in credit with you.

Yup I am doing the efi Conversion myself....carbies bite even when run on gas....I am going however with Wolf 3D aftermarket computer..easily programmed and is made to suit even wit dual fuel...not using the nissan dizzy to $$$ and not good anyways and its too $$ to repair. The major expense you will find if you go turbo (I am) are injectors on the Nissan multi point manifold...doesn't matter who ya know its still costly nearly a gorilla for a set supplied only.

And by the way there was a far better and cheaper alternative than the commodore fuel pump, with me - Bolt on Bandit - in mind.

Just outa curiosity whats the whole thing costing you? A V6 commy motor has almost exactly the same output as the 4.2 carby anyway, and they are cheap as. You could prolly6 have it in and running for less than $1200.

Just a thought.

I was thinking more along the lines of buying a wreked 4.8GU from the auctions, then I get better motor, axles, diff,CV and a non buggered gearbox. Then just swapping it all in.

Clarify a few things.

Using factory GQ EFI Sender and Pump.

Delco computer costs $0

Commodore V6, would you swap in a smaller engine and try to adopt to gearbox, exhaust etc. Would be a backwards move.

GU has merit but dollars and the 6 runs good at the moment.

Yup am doing the conversion but not wit a comodore computer don't you remember how :bad-words: the computers are in them....it may not cost you anything now but how much would you rather have installed a nissan/aftermarket computer instead - when your in a situation hanging off the side of a hill climb with no reverse option and the commodore computer packs it in??

Note:

Aftermarket the Vn-onwards range of computers are available on the shelf at all repco/spare parts outlets.....However a Nissan computer is not available, even from you mates that remap them don't have them on the shelf! Why...oh thats right its a Nissan thing....not a Toyota/Holden/Jeep Thing!!! :D :D

These are just the facts I am not having a go at ya...I know also the nissan computer is dearer but if ya going to do something nail it right the first time - repairs cost to much and I leave that up to Toyota owners!!

Drafty is the one to speak to about this, as his brother owns Shrek (if you dont know it is the green turbo petrol GQ ute). Only problem is he isnt very mechanical (he's the navi/winch bitch). Best bet would be to give OnTrack a ring and talk to Andrew, or phone JPC (both are in Melb).
I dont know the numbers but Juzza should be able to help out there.
