snorkel problems
i have a airtec snorkel on my 2.8 hilux and it is very noisey does any one else have this problem
Its a common problem on hilux diesel engines.
For some reason they seem to make the snorkle body resonate causing vibration and noise.
Fitting a turbo apparently stops the resonation (but probably add more of the whooshing induction noise).
Paul.

had the same problem with mine. As Guts said, make sure the bolts that go through the guards don't touch the guard. When I installed mine the first time I didn't drill out the holes to 18mm as instructed and this created heaps of rattle. In the end, I had to redrill the holes and I baught a piece of 5mm thick rubber from Bunnings, cut to the shape of the snorkel, and inserted this between the snorkel and the guard. Made the world of difference.
Try one of these.. I put one in mine (a steel snork that resonates a bit) and it quietened it down. Also the guy at Unifilter said when I mentioned noise that some Hiluxes have to get a thing like a hiclone put into the bottom of the snorkel to stop the noise... he said it fits in the bit where the snork goes through the guard but I didnt really pay any attention...

Yes but it cuts the air flow and reduces power so why would anybody put the dumb things in?
because their girlfriends won't stop complaining about the noise?
Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
I ran a safari snorkel on the NA 2.8 I had for a year or so. (back in the day) The induction noise was terrible, a bit like someone was hitting the guard with a powersaw.
I tried all sorts of things, including isloating the snorkel, and nothing made much difference. Safari used to fit a "pre cleaner" foam filter inside the end of the snorkel to try and help, but all I noticed it doing was reducing power.
I opened up the inlet of the aircleaner to 3", made a small ram duct next to the radiator ( fitted into the A/C holes) and knocked out the blanking panels on that side of the grille. hooked up with 3" RFH ducting from Purple pig. Made noticeably more power, esp on the hwy, and was very quiet. Forgot to hook up the snorkel once when I locked the hubs one night and drowned it though. ( actually got away with that with no engine damage though )
My theory is that that the commercially available snorkels for the hilux are bigger diameter at the guard than at the ram duct, so when presented with the inherent resonances of the 2.8, this large volume of air moving slower than anywhere else inthe inlet tract acts like a resonant chamber and massively amplifies the noise.
this is not really a solution I know, just my observations. The best solution I had was a turbo. no noise problems then (from the snorkel at least)I owuld be interested to know if anyone with a "home made" exhaust tube snorkel on a 2.8 (fixed diameter thoughout) resonates.
Steve.

I red that the prefilters are not to be used with a turboed donk as they restrict the airflow too much. So if they restrict the airflow at all, why would you use them? Just for noise levels?
I rekon my 1kz-te sounds cool as with the snorkel and the passengers window down, blub blub blub (with a whistle in there too).
Definately not a noise I would complain about.

GO the 80...The mods have started :-)
I fitted a safari snorkel to my 2.8 lux some months ago and i had noise and vibration too, it got really annoying so i decided to see if i coud improve it, i took the whole thing off and tried out a few things with the way it was mounted, i drilled the mounting holes on the guard out a bit more so i would have some more play and flexibility finding that "just right " mounting spot, also i added a thicker piece of rubber at the top screw in mounting bracket. The results were really very good , all vibrations were eliminated and the air induction noise was really pleasant instead of loud and annoying. I was very pleased with the result.
Love my Lux

thanks for that muzz iam going to try put some rubber in my doesn't have rubber there at all is this some thing that tjm should off fitted i no that arb puts rubber in.
some times my is quiet and then it will be very noisey
theres only 1 thing worse than a noisy car and thats a wingin girlfriend so thers 1 of 3 things to do & ive tried 2out of 3 and both worked guess wich 2
1. pulled over & told her 2 drive keep in mind she cant drive a manual not to mention 1 with a fully loaded trailer
2. give her a pair of ear plugs told to go to sleep & turn up metalica to drown her out
3. gafer tape her mouth & ears shut
now in conclusion u should have bouht a safari the work well

my girl friend soon to be my wife is used to it now she dosnt wing any more, you would think that tjm and arb would fix the problem to what is cause the noise ( the design off the snorkles) or make up some mod to fix it .
i surpose that is two much to ask
