Snorkel for Jack

Post by DAZZ »

Went to order a Safari Snorkel for my jack today and was told that I would have to hack into the guard flare (2003 Widetrack) to fit it. After looking at some pics of non widetracks with snorkels it seems near impossible for it to be near the flare. Any info and\or pics on this would be much appreciated!!!

Thanx DAZZ

ok. holden only lists the snorkel for the 3.0 t/d. it doesnt say anything about cutting the flare, but the pic shows the hole in the guard a fair way up, above the height of the side indicator, so maybe they dont interfere with the flare. if you have a fax, i can fax you a pic. hope this helps

I'm pretty sure they miss. I know a few guys that have them on 95+ troopers, none cut the flares on gas engines.

Thanks for the info guys. I was told by a retailer that I would have to mod the flare, but it didn't seem right. Ordered one anyway and was told that Safari had nil stock and I would have to wait 3+ weeks for one :bad-words: :bad-words: Just not ment to have one!!!!!

I just ordered an Airtech snorkel for my 98 3.5 Monterey from TJM. Tried Safari from ARB but they apparently only supply for the diesel model.

When checking the model number, the TJM dealer discovered that it is exactly the same part number as for the earlier model 3.2 vehicles.

Considering that the 98 models had a change to the grille and headlights it would seem reasonable that the part of the guard occupied by the snorkel would be the same as the earlier models, although I have never really compared them side by side. The air box under the bonnet is the same as far as I can tell.

My desire for a snorkel changed to need after watching a mate's Rodeo flame out in a not so deep crossing. Resulting damage was 1 broken and 2 bent conrods, a bent valve, a broken piston, etc

The cost of repairs was staggering at $13000. He was able to claim insurance (AAMI) because it happened on the Wonnongatta Rd and was deemed an accident. It was so expensive because they replaced the short motor with a brand new one, the cost of this was about $9000 alone.
He had located a motor from a wrecker for $4000 before the claim was processed, so I guess the cash cost would have been about $5000 if he had had to go that way.

My bow wave in the same crossing was 1/4 way up the bonnet, which means that my air intake was also below the water level - gulp..so now, a-snorkelling we will go!

Looks great Dazz!

Funnily enough I actually had a dream (nightmare?) lastnight about seriously damaging the Jack in a water crossing. Not that I actually believe in these things being significant but I think that I had better go out and get a snorkel soon anyway! :D

I now have the Airtech snorkel fitted to the Monterey. TJM did a very nice job of it. The unit is nice and neat, there are no suction noises, vibrations, or any other bad things.

Looking great Dazz you should be wrapped with it.

Hey, that housing estate looks familiar! I lived in Glengarry for 20 years

Hope there's actually some decent water in the waterways around LV so you can test it out. - Traralgon south, or at the Tyers pumping station crossing? my fav

Dazz, its a wierd feeling deliberately drilling a bloody great hole in the pride & joy isn't it. I didn't really know if the Rodeo snorkel was going to fit the F so it was an expensive mistake if it didn't work. The mInister for War and Finance was most supportive :x

Mine didn't want to know. She sorta understood that the $XXX Guard was cheaper then the $XXXXX Engine. All went easy though. Safari template was spot-on.

Utemad: Borrowed the shed off a mate (in pics). Can just see project F20 if the back ground of one of the shots. SPOA and 33s at the moment, bigger rubber and 3.5 rover to follow.
