What causes small amounts of Black smoke? Hilux 2.8d

Post by Milamber »

Hi All,

I have noticed that the exhaust emits small amounts of black smoke when under load (you can see it in the rear vision mirror, especially when cars with lights on are behind). The 2.8d has only done around 200,000 so I am thinking that it is not worn enough to cause smoke. Can this be caused by dodgy injectors or the like? (making it run rich?)

Thanks and Cheers. Any cheap solutions would be a bonus............

Mine always smokes a little bit under high revs/high load, but in that regard I think the later 2.8's had a fuel aneroid to reduce smoking a bit, not sure when the chage occurred, around 94/95 I think.

I would not be too concened so long as it is light smoke only, however, generally, if you can see it in the mirror on the move it is pretty heavy.

black smoke is generaly unburnt fuel. Most diesels will smoke a bit when youve got your foot to the floor as your pushing more diesel in than can be burnt.

oil is blue smoke, diesel is black smoke, white smoke is water vapor, diesel on a cold start, or a sign that air is in the diesel lines somewhere.

The pump and injectors should be serviced [as pre Toyota specs] every 100,000 km

Thanks all, sounds like the injectors. I'll try an additive cleaner and if it dosent work then over to the injector people it is.

Anyone got advice on a good fuel additive to clean the injectors?
I know there are heaps, but maybe advice would help weed out the good ones.
Cheers.

i wouldn"t even bother puting injector cleaner in i would just get the injector done cause they are well over jew and what the injector cleaner dose is losing all the crap that is stuck to the inside off your fuel tank and then suck it up through you your fuel system not good.
it cost me 310 with labor to get done and it made a hell off a diffences cheers gavin

did my injectors by my self, and i am not much of a mechanic. cost $250 from brisbane diesel injectors @ rocklea. i can notice a bit better accelleration.

no, diesel is not flammable enough to be lit from a spark (i'm pretty sure)
indubitably

While on the subject try and answer a question of mine if possoble please guys.

I give mine a boot out of gear and get black smoke and then white smoke at the top end???

I also get smoke puffing out at the lights at times but only occassionally which is not good when the exhaust pokes out the passenger side and into someones window directly  . I give it a rev and it stops.

TD BTW
