Best cheap zook to buy for comp in standard class

Post by ausyota »

OK Im a toyota driver and know very little about zookis.
My missus has caught the comp bug and wants to buy a cheap zook for fun on weekends and competing in the local 4wd comps in standard class.

So fill me in on what I need to look for.

Widetrack is the go I spoze?
What year were the first widetracks?
Are the zook utes any good? could build a cool tray with bar work etc?
What motors came in what years?
The newer sieras are coils yes? What year did they start?
What is the standard tyre size?

I am limited with what mods I can do and still be in standard class.
Do the engines respond well to minor tweeking ie extractors etc?
Lockers are not a goer in standard class but is there a good limi slip that can be fitted (ie detroit true track)?

Thanks a lot.
Paul.

Standard size tyres in any pattern ie mud terrains, standard height suspension, no lockers but limi slip allowed, standard motor but basic mods allowed ie internal mods, extractors, snorkel etc. No body lift allowed.

Id go a widetrack simply because coilys would probbaly be hard to get an lsd for and the engines arnt very reliable.

I run 28's (28.3 to be exact) (225x75x15) on a stock 86 narrowtrack, and they do rub on the inner gards. (ie no full lock) When I got them, we worked out that they were about 3 mm (in height) over the allowable 'standard' limit .... so you should get away with 28's.

Well now that it's out, yeah I'm looking to sell up and become a full time navi in a jeep. So Paul if you keen i'll give you a drive, be warned tho you will love it! I have changed the rear spring setup sence the roll and it has made a huge difference. I will be modifing the front situp a tad as well to help settle the front. (move hangers back and inwards) will also move shocks back to clear diff. So basicly the zook is well built and all R&D has been done. Some flex is still restricted by spring clamps etc...

If you buy a standard you will spend heaps on it getting it better which you will want. Also I have some 235/75/15 bfg muds on 7 inch rims for sale if you interested.

Good on the missus, she's making a wise decision.
[quote="STD CONSUMER"]haha, i'm tellin you, my camp was hard to find on Saturday night!
