I have just bought a Pajero, its stock, and i was thinking i would love to tag along on a trek one weekend, but then i thought i will soon be left behind cos my car aint modded enough.
What are the basic, essential mods required for a safe/fun weekend away ? (obviously i am beginner and have no desire to climb steepoest cliff or traverse deepest puddles)
I am starting to build a survival kit of ropes, axe, chainsaw, ehaust airbag jack thing - will get fan belts and rad hoses etc Does anyone if a basic essentials list of bits and pieces to carry before going out exists that i can follow?
Also whats are the esential mods, eg a set of wheels/tyres to whack on just for the bush, UHF radio? what else is basic should be done before anything else?
I see heaps of pics here with cars fairly under water, and i wondered if you stall and the water is up to your bumper aint your exhaust gonna fill up with water, if it does fill up a lot, how does this affect your ability to restart your car?

First thing first
FORGET THE ROPES go to a 4x4 shop like ARB (there's one in Dandenong) and buy your self a snatch strap and 2 bow shackels
Don't forget the shovel!!!!
A hand held UHF is good if your only using it while 4x4ing and if you want buy a second set of rims with mud tyres just for 4x4ing.
The Tyre Factory have a deal on at the momment 4 of 31 x 10.5 x 15 retread muds on 15 x 7 sunnys for about $500-
I'd run them if they made 33"s as they're only for off road so who cares if you chew them out as they dodn't cost that much so you can then keep a set of tyres for aroud town driving.
The exhaust only fills up if you stall it.
A snorkel is good for deep water/mud crossings, But that depends how serious you want to get.
Another good thing to carry is a can of WD40 and some basic hand tools incase somthing dose happen you might be able to get your self going again.
That'll do for me for now.

A good bottle jack or hi lift(if you have somewhere to jack from) and base plate

No thats VERY VERY WRONG.
You should work around your least capable vehicle. and you ALWAYS have an experienced Tail end charlie to follow up.
handy tip #1. Join a club. Do driver training with the club, Learn from them, do driver training, find people similar minded and do some light day trips with them to gain experience and confidence.

Agree with all above....
If just talking about vehicle mods then the first two things I do is
1. Tyes. All terrain or mud terrain tread pattern depending on your needs. Make sure they're of LT (Light Truck) construction. They'll be stronger and lees likely to puncture.
2. Suspension. The longer you keep the wheels on the ground the longer you keep traction.
