Where do the Aussie G60 guys hang out???
Where do the Aussie G60 guys hang out???
So....where?
I reguarly post/visit 4 Patrol forums and am a mod on three of them. Hardly any Aussie guys are on the net who own G60's and the like. What is the deal..they not online? Is there some site I have not found they visit? I know for a fact you got lot's of guys running G60's over there. And a handful know their shit well. They have been the ones to inform me about disc brakes on a G60. Locker info and tranny upgrades. But they are rarely seen or heard from. So I am looking for some guys who know G60s well and are willing to share info. Best would be somebody who knows both MQ's and G60's very well. I have info to exchange on power steering, SOA and other mods. Just don't feel like typing it all on a forum all day when nobody is reading it!
So where are you guys at!? I need some like minded 60 owners who have as much experience or more than me on these trucks so that I can get more info and food for thought.
Any help??

There really isnt many people out there with them anymore.
It is rare to see a G60 around, let alone travelling or 4bing one.
Mate we are a rare breed
Like bogged said there are`nt 2 many people around enthusiastic about em.
Those that have em love em for their strength.
As far as tech info i probly don`t have as much as ur self but i have done a few mods 2 make my old girl a little bit more capable.
hope u hear from more G60 owners so i can read about there rigs as well

kinda hard to believe nobody has them anymore and nobody runs them. This because we got less than 3000 in the USA and we have lot's of enthusiests. You guys got what like 50,000 or maybe even 100,000 G60's.
I think they are out there and they get used. I also think there are some guys who know a ton about them but they are not in the spot light. IMO

Difference here is you never got the MQ over there which makes the G60 a Dinosaur, nearly everyone here traded up to MQ's then GQ's and now GU's. G60 is about par with a 70's Landrover/Landcruiser. Most are scrap by now, you can easily pick up a good MQ for the same price as a rare decent G60. GQ's are the go now for value & s/h parts.
Nissans just kept getting better in capability & strength.
I suspect if Nissans had an even price footing to Jeeps over there you'd have a lot more of them.

well...you guys have some good points and all but....
I have spoken to a bunch of G60 guys over there. These guys like the old school Patrols same reason we do in the USA, because they are cool! Plus they are tuff as all hell. Thing is I never hear from these guys or see them online. You also have plenty of people running old TLC's and Rovers over there so same must go for old Patrols. I know guys in Aus running v8's, marks 5spd, rear locker, disc brakes and more on old atrols so you can't say they are not capable 4x4's.
It is also a little odd you guys never see them but I see them online for sale all the time in Aus. Shit for that matter I just missed a LWB van model a week ago in Aus that for sale. I also bought and found my G60 Ute online. Plus I know where to get aftermarket parts for them in Aus so why would the parts be for sale if nobody uses them!?
What I wanted and am after is some people who know enough about both G60's and MQ's to help me confirm or shut down some things. Such as fairly easy mods using MQ parts. Believe it or not the MQ does use some of the same parts as a G60 and some of that is still available from Nissan new such as license plate lights. MQ and G60 have the exact same license light. P40 distro also bolts right on the older P engine and well there is more too. I did find out in last few days the P40 and the SD33 uses the same bolt pattern, same mounts and more. So am trying to see if these kinds of thing will lead to 1980-onward Patrol stuff bolting up fairly easily.
I can find out what I need on my own but it is much harder to do and takes ton's of work on my part.
and FYI, we got 40 year old TLC and Rovers in the USA selling for $30,000 and sometimes more. Old Patrols are selling well over $10,000 in good shape. So they are not junk to most USA classic 4x4 enthusiests.

when the G60's were around was long before "city people" were interested in owning a 4wd, they were all working vehicles on farms, or used by emergency services or whatever. when parts starting getting hard to get, or they started getting a bit old and unreliable they were more or less left abandoned. 9 out of 10 G60's that you see up for sale are sitting in a paddock or a shed where they have been for the last 10-15 years.
great rigs though. i would kill to have the time to do a resto job like the ones you have done.

i picked up another MWB G60 a few months ago it's my third. i love em they're a great old truck, i saw another one the other day sitting in a blokes paddock just up the road from here. been thinking about going up and seeing if he will part with it.
i know a bit about them but not a heap, one thing i do know is marks aren't doing any more stuff for them which sucks.

if you go here and search patrol 1960-1979 there is always 6 or more on there. Nice ones some times too for cheap. And once in awhile a rare model will pop up on there.

Since not many people in Aus. want the old Patrols I am going to start steeling them and importing to the USA! I come across to many good ones for cheap and am after the rare ones which I do see in Aus. It is damn easy to convert these things to LHD too!
Your right Wendle and in a way it is a good thing because if on the same farm 30 years it was likely taken care of pretty well. We got the same thing here with the abondon Patrols but they are usually trashed and far gone.
And yes we in the USA are somewhat upset with marks for no longer making G60 stuff.

Well they may have some classic looks appeal unfortunately with the best factory LSD ever made & excellent travel coil spring suspension, gearboxes and diffs you can thrash the living daylights out of, stock GQ's will just kick there butts offroad in most situations. Maybe a V8 is good in a G60, but many drop them into GQ too, though the TB42 & TD42 when tweaked a bit are no slugs either.
I've got a syncro ring I pulled out of my drain plug 6 months ago and can still get excessive wheelspin with 255/85x16's on launch & 2nd gear chirping no problems.
I cracked a head and kept driving it for 6 months, later 3 months with oil/water mix in the sump.
You can throw them up against a hill till you either get up, give up or dent it, in stock form they won't break.

Where do G60 owners hang out?
Round here, the TAB, stables at the racetrack, and sometimes the Commercial Hotel.
They(he) are(is) the surly bugger who doesn't give anyone who hasent lived in the district for 100+ years the time of day.......
There is at least three in town that get used regularly (total population here is ~2000) and all owned by old guys. One is a trayback with a shooting outfit on it, one ragtop and one hardtop. All in pretty bad shape, but still out there...
Doubt you'll find much enthusiasm online for these rigs overhere.
Cheers

well of course I would never argue a G60 is better than a GQ. But it is a lot of fun to own and drive the old ones. And they can go a lot fo places if driven right. I would also trade 4 of my old school Patrols for a GQ but can't have one so instead I have 7 old school P-trolls!
I guess there is no point seeking hardcore G60 owners if they are not to be found. Oh well I will still be enjoying these trucks and working on making them better.
And like I say since you guys don't want the old scholl Patrols I won't feel bad about steeling them and bringing to the USA.

I have a mate who used to own one, 1964 model - owned it for about 25 years. He even rebuilt it with a new galvanised chassis at one point. When he got rid of it it was pretty rough and everything apart from the chassis needed work (no rust though). No-one wanted to buy it and eventually he sold it for $250AUD to a wrecker.
He now owns a Range Rover Classic - so you could say he has "seen the light" - or that he wants something a bit more comfortable.

Yes there is still a lot of Landcruisers and Land Rovers getting around, but that does not automatically mean the G60's are as abundant. Sales, government contracts, reputation and the like seen the others sold more, hence more being around, G60's never had that. The only G60's i see these days are the ones sitting in paddocks rusting away, they simply are not that common. It wasn't until the MQ that the Patrol took off in this country.
Also as previously mentioned, Patrols are rare in the US and you yourself are an enthusiast so pay more attention. In Australia we have had all Patrol models since then unlike the US, even with Ford rebadging the GQ and selling them. MQ/K's, GQ's and GU's are plentiful on the other hand, i can easily point out nearly a dozen Patrols of various models in less then a 1km radius of my home, none of which are G60's, thats just the way it is.
Hi dont see many on the road let alone the tracks .I have a g60 and a gq coil cab . The g60 has a 350 chev, tricked up 350 turbo2" body lift ,4" spring lift ,good flex set up.big roll bars , soft top ,custom haft doors .and 35"simex comp tyres.its a great truck for day trips ,but can not beat the gq for longer trips and hard core 4bying.The g60 much cooler though
what ever happened to Zeke Steggalls old Tuff Truck G60 the blue and white one?
beats me...never knew the guy but know the truck. It is pretty sweet and one of the most capable off-road G60's I have ever seen. I got some pictures of it in the pc somewhere. SOA, toy front locked, H260 rear locked, v8, Marks 5spd...
www.rmp-o.com
Well you still got them being built and used.
1969 G60H
Marks 5spd
front disc brakes
ARB locker custom fitted to the stock H260
Thomas PTO with winch
34" Simex JT's
bull bar as air tank
and more!
This Patrol belongs to a guy named Rob who lives in Aus....personally I think it rocks and he says it goes near everywhere he points it.

A nice vehicle in good nick for it's age, but we just don't get that excited over them when we could spent the same amount of money and got a lot more capability out of a GQ. Many G60's left are not in as good nick and would be cheaper to buy than the price of the tyres alone. The sum of tyres, winch, locker & 5 speed conversion would buy a GQ.
No doubt pretty capable, but mainly due to the air locker & tyres.
I did my dabble in vintage 4x4 with a 69 Landrover, fun yes, yes I miss it at times but it was rough and no where near the reliability & potential of later models for the same total purchase & mods outlay.

the Marks 5spd is 46:1 and has an overdrive
Stock diffs 4.10
235lbs of torque at 1600rpm's, stock
C216 front is compareable to a dana44 in axle size and strength
H260 rear is bigger than a dana60 axle wise
chassis is beyond tuff and only rot in the #2 cross member will kill it
approuch & departure angles are excellent
grade ability is at 80% before locker
disc brake bolted on from early MQ, cheap for you guys
stock prop shaft bolts are 5/8" and that is frigging huge on a truck like this!
other benifits include a body that sits above the frame line so no scrubbing on low hanging junk body parts, not much cutting needed
damn easy to hose it out and wash it off, simply sheet metal inside it
extra cool factors include lift off doors and folding windshield
turning circle of 22 ft on a MWB G60, 16 feet on a SWB 60 series!
you can hand crank start it unlike any modern day truck
everything on it is extremly easy to work on
the most simple air conditioning ever concieved, dash and kick vents!
exteremly simple to elevate diff breathers and tranny breather
stock 2.3 meter fording depth, more with deep fording option
stock oil to water seals on motor tranny and transfer to keep out the elements
all in all equally comparable to any TLC or Rover if not better! Go Old School P-trolls!
As capable as a GQ, doubtful. As fun as a GQ, likely. As comfortable as a GQ, don't think so. Cooler than a GQ, fully! Cost as much as a GQ, seriously doubt it....most work is done by owner and custom that = cheap. Eat up old Rovers!? All day long!!!
Understand the lack of enthusiesim for the old Patrols. You guys have had them since 1964 and still do but in the USA it is a relic. So to me guys like the owner of this yellow 69 G60H truely ROCK! There is a reason 25+ year old cars are called classics....they have class!

GQ has an unbreakable 5 speed, 4.1 diffs are most common with 3.5, 4.3, 4.7 also factory options, same torque, diffs are bullet proof.
I'm not sure what 80% grade ability equals in degrees, but sure a LWB GQ could easily do it and probably similar age Jeeps, Landrovers & Cruisers.
Chassis is also equal in strength
Only earliest GQ's like mine have a drum brake rear end.
I epoxy coated my floor and have vinyl flooring, but unfortunately the water does pool in the footwells with the bungs in.
2.3m fording depth? Over the roof height, no factory snorkle, how does the engine get air? Driver? Typo, I assume
SWB GQ have a tight turning circle and are available from about $5000 Aust.
There are obviously a few enthusiasts around and it's good to see older trucks getting around still so I hope you find the info you need.

yes my bad....metric system not something I am used to...
fording depth is 30" stock and 40" with optional water proof gear
the point of posting the info was not to say old school P-trolls are better than a GQ, a Series L/R or a FJ40. No the point is to show you these old school P-trolls are damn tuff and built for off-road action. A GQ is defiantely better and if I could have a GQ I would. Along with the old school P-trols!

G60's yee haaa
G60's have the stongest driveline ever made in a 4wd...
I know and have spoken to a few g60 owners on this forum, Rob has competition truck - awesome!
There are more G60's then anyone realises, dormant so to speak - but remain unbreakable. If there was a resurgance of aftermarket parts, they might increase in value to a competitor.
I am indeed researching the best powersteering conversion for them, and also a rear locker.
Feel free to drop a line.
