GU 4.2TD into 2.8td GQ LWB

Post by sicgq »

Hi
Thinking of retiring my RD2.8T for a GU 4.2TD/ incooler.
Has anyone done this conversion? Is it pretty much a straight swap motor and gearbox?
Would it be better and cheaper to go for a GQ 4.2 diesel and fit an aftermarket turbo?
What about accessories aircon can the 2.8 's be used? Could it be done for around $10G ?
Got to be cheaper than a new truck
Any help would be greatly appreciated?
thanks

Red Rover did it I think.
Good luck getting TD42T with intercooler for 10k.
Aftermarket Turbo kit is about $3000+ $3000 for intercooler for aftermarket.
Sandy had a TD42 for $3000 while back...
+ wiring, time, labour, etc etc..

Could it be done for $10k? Depends on how much you do yourself.

Probably would be cheaper to flog yours, and get a new Diesel wagon..

Wrong :P

Red Rover did a TB42 to a TD42 swap

I did the 2.8 to 4.2 swap

Let me list you the problems.

2.8 and 4.2 dont share the same mounts.

drivers side chassis mount is off by 2 inches so a plate will have to be made up on the engine to acommodate the new location for the engine mount to be placed properly.

the electrics on the 2.8 arnt the same as the 4.2 as the 2.8 i think has throttle sensor etc and i havent been able to find one on the 4.2's electrics chart. My GQ now has the 4.2 in it now and is goin to the auto electrics this saturday to get the wiring converted over.

the diff flanges are smaller on the 2.8 meaning if you want to run 4.2 gearbox you'll need to change the flanges over to a 4.2 flanges

the tailshafts are different also, you'll need the 4.2 shafts as well.

Gearbox crossmember bolts up straight up no problems.

clutch system on the 2.8 is on drivers side whereas the 4.2 has it on the passenger side, so you'll have to reroute the hydralic lines and hook it up to the slave cylinder on the passenger side of the gearbox.

I went thru all this coz i didnt want to sell my GQ as i was still paying it off and a lot of my time and labour went into this conversion as i had a 4.2 sittin there so i rebuilt it and put it in. I didnt take into account the extras involved in the conversion.

A/C cant be used. as its a different mount on the 2.8. i had to remove mine and source a 4.2 air conditioner compressor. pretty much all the accesories cannot be used. To complete the swap 100 percent you'll need to get a 4.2 with turbo and all the accessories that come with it.

10K... maybe if you do everything yourself

Also need to get a 4.2 radiator and fan shroud as they are different also.

In your positoin, just sell the 2.8 and buy a 4.2 outright.

Much easier IMO

When I priced a TD42(non-intercooler) they where $7500. This include p/s,a/c and alt.
