navara, are they good or shite

hi all, after some input
looking at a 86 (could be 88) mod nissan navara 4x4 ute, 2.4l petrol.
just want it for daily driver plus the odd fire trail and beach access.
want to know if these things are any good and what sort of fuel ecconomy to expect???
would rather a dual cab hilux but only have 6000 to spend and this navara is in great condition plus comes with a big warranty, so i can break stuff n not worry :)

Navara is similar to Raider, IFS Lux etc for ability. All are gonna be good enough for basic 4wheeling and can obviously be improved with the usual aftermarket lockers suspension and tyres.

IFS is a limitation but there are worse limitations than those IFS sets... not being able to get lockers is a bigger killer of offroad perfromance.

Lux has a little more support for aftermarket.

I'd say if it's cheap enough and meets your criteria go for it.... means more money for mods :D

The bloke next door to me has got a Navarra around the vintage of the one your looking at, they seem to handle well on loose dirt roads at speed, just like a car. He couldn't keep up with my old cruiser once we got into low range territory but it kept going even though it is really clapped out, a Navarra in reasonable nick would be a good vehicle. He's never complained about its fuel consumption.

Only thing is the 2.4 petrol is a very gutless thing. Make sure you are going to be fine with this small power plant on the road, otherwise you will end up thrashing it and wrecking it...

As long as you stil to the fire trails and beach stuff you should be right. If you get more into the 4wd thing and want to go on the harder tracks, thats where the problems could start.

had a mechanic inspect the vehicle n found it was a heapa,
so if anyone knows of any good 4x4 for 6000 let me know, has to be 4seater (ie dual cab)

If i was in ur position and wanted a ute, id get a lux.
They come solid diff front and rear, there is a huge amount of parts available, and There are many aftermarket parts made for them, such as lockers etc.

The D21 truck never really had an official name over here, but became known as the Hardbody. They're pretty good little trucks if they're taken care of, and even the little 4-cylinder models could hold their own alright on the trail. There are a fair number of folks that flog the piss out of of 'em and they take it pretty well except for the weak steering linkage.
In the last year of the D21 Nissan USA quietly named it the Frontier, but it didn't get any badging and I don't think it was even marketed by that name, it wasn't until 1998 when they rolled out the D22 model that the Frontier name was officially in use and on the truck.
In search of an MQ (offset) H233b rear, housing only preferred, plus a complete GQ or GU front (4.6 ratio ideal) to be shipped to the US. Cheap! Email/PM if you can help.

6k puts you in gen1 4runner terratory, or gen 1 pajero ?

Have a good search of the trading post online and www.carsales.com.au and you will find a nice pajero or hilux for that money, in pajero you may even get some luxaries with it.,
