Land Cruiser PTO winch
G'day guys,
I have a Thomas pto winch from an 80 series cruiser I wish to fit to my 75 ute with an ARB commercial bar. The bar is set up to suit a high or low mount electric winch but needs modifying for the Thomas. I would really appreciate any pics of this set up on a OL members rig so I can check a few placement queries. The drum is much wider than the slot in the bar and I would like to confirm that the cable should feed off the bottom of the winch drum. The t/case side of things is no drama, mounting the winch to the bar is my area of doubt.

Thats cool, my friends PTO is off a 60 series and is forward and reversable, so u can winch out and in in 5th gear if need be.
If your pto fits the 75 transfer box, it is not from an 80 series...

Brian, did you mount the rear L-shaped rail at the factory location or did you have to redrill the frame? Did you run a bolt through the frame with a nut at the other end or did you tap the frame? Did you say you welded the fairlead to the round tube on the bullbar? In the 75 series the PTO fairlead is built into the front winch rail, so an aftermarket one has to be used. Then the cable exit position can become an issue.

that isn't my setup. I know it's not Compton Allens nor is it Dave Stedmans. could it be Lio Herberts - looks like a 1990- LJ7x grille? My photo library doesn't go back far enough and it looks like the photos I did have of it were lost when I had a big crash at work about 3 years ago.
"bundy monkey" on the board has bought my 70 and it still has the PTO, he might post some photos of the setup if you ask nicely.
I made a custom rear crossmember out of 2" RHS, and yes I think I drilled the frame as the LJ70 frame didn't have holes for the winch corssmember. used nuts on the other side, didn't feel the frame steel was thick enough to tap.
I used an electric winch fairlead mounted in the "proper" low position, my PTO wound in under the bottom of the drum. I mounted the winch lower and further back in the bar, with 2" square section aluminium billet spacers between the winch and the bar. bar needed modifications to the bottom to clear the bottom front of the worm drive housing.
my bar was also modified to match 2" body lift, which necessitated building a custom double universal joint setup to raise the drive from clearning the front crossmember, up to the winch gearbox input shaft.
don't know if any of that helps.

Could that cruiser be a 61 or 62 series..twin sq headlight in a GXL or whatever had chrome bits on the lower grill??

PS if u get a forward and reversable PTO gearbox unit, you can spool in from below, with the 5 forward gears, where as only in reverse with the normal setup.

yeah could be a late 60. hard to tell.
My PTO setup used the toyota winch with the Thomas PTO box and had 5 "in" speeds, with spooling from below the drum. If you use the toyota POT you get forward and reverse, or if you use the thomas winch and the thomas PTO box you have to spool the cable over the top of the drum to get 5 "in" gears.
ie the worm in the toyota winch is the opposite handed helix to the one in the Thomas.

There are variations in the Toyota PTO gearbox, the early models are the two way, the late ones are one way. Figures I only have the one way :(

there are late model reversible toyota PTO boxen. Stedman-san has one on his FJ75.
