Exhaust

Post by 40 lover »

my rear tyre is scrubing against the exhaust on my 40, i can't shift it over the opposite way becasue i there is an extra fuel tank there. and all it does is just bang against the tank anyway, and its driving me insane. i was thinking if i could just cut it short. the muffler is just under the sidesteps and i was wondering if it would be illegal to cut it, and have stick out just infront of the rear wheels.

has anyone had these problems. what did you do. and is this legal.

um pretty sure the exhaust outlet has to be to the rear of any adjustable windows.

i got a roadworthy with a side pipe on my thing. (tray)

but the tip has to extend 40mm past the rear of the body but cant go outside the dimensions of the vehicle.

tip must be pointing down between 15* and 45* to the horizontal

Mine has been driven like this for 12 months and walked around by a police man.

I am moving it to under my tray for my blueslip though if it all helps. You shouldn't get touched though if it isn't tooooo loud and noticable.

my rear windows aren't adjustable, it would be behind the drivers window.

it doesn't stick out 40mm now anyway, but i don't know what you mean anyway.

why not just cut the muffler out and weld a peice of pipe were the muffler was
cus from what you say its just the muffler not the exaust system or would it still hit if there was a pipe there not a muffler

mine passed a roadworthy in vic with it exiting just infront of the front wheel if a copper wants to pick on it its unroadworthy tho exhaust must exit behind the rear axle according to vicroads anyway
id just cut it and keep the rest fso if you get picked up on it you can just get it welded back on

doesnt say anywhere about the exhaust in relation to the axles.

its to the rear of any opening windows. its to stop gases coming into the cab.

40lover: if you dont have those little rear 1/4 windows, then id do it.

i didnt understand really either but i did what the roadworthy guy said and he passed it. doubt it will cause any troubles. if by any chance you do get pulled over for it. just say thats the way it came. cop wont know shit.

FROM VICROADS WEBSITE.

12. EXHAUST SYSTEMS

Modified and alternative exhaust systems are permitted if they satisfy the following requirements:

-The exhaust outlet must extend at least 40 mm beyond the furthermost outboard or rearmost joint of the floor pan which is not continuously welded or permanently sealed which could permit direct access of exhaust gases to the passenger compartment, but must not protrude beyond the perimeter of the vehicle when viewed in plan.
-If to the side of the vehicle, the exhaust outlet must discharge downwards at an angle to the horizontal of not less than 15 degrees nor more than 45 degrees, and to the rear of any adjustable window or vent; if the vehicle is manufactured after June 1988, the discharge must be to the right-hand side of the vehicle.
-If to the rear of the vehicle, the exhaust outlet must discharge at not more than 10 degrees above or 45 degrees below the horizontal.
-No exhaust system whether it be functional or ornamental is to be mounted in such a manner as to create a hazardous situation particularly from hot surfaces or projections.
-All piping and muffler systems must be adequately supported.
-Exhaust extractors may be fitted to a motor vehicle manufactured before July 1976, provided they do not foul any part of the steering, suspension, braking or fuel systems. In all other cases evidence either in the form of an Approval Certificate or acceptable evidence from the extractor manufacturer to show that the vehicle continues to comply with all applicable emission regulations will be required.

Evidence from the extractor manufacturer is acceptable if it includes information:

identifying the extractors as appropriate ones for the vehicle;
certifying that the extractors have all the features and fittings necessary to allow the vehicle's emission control system to be reconnected and work properly; and
describing how the extractors should be fitted.

The vehicle must continue to comply with the ground clearance requirements.

There must be no escape path for exhaust gases other than the exhaust outlet, and the vehicle must continue to comply with the noise emission standards applicable to it.

i had the same problem your having so relocated the muffler to under the floor on the drivers side and made a short tailpipe that exits just in front of the rear wheel. The floor gets a lot hotter now though! I have to get a rego inspection in 2 months so hopefully it will pass ok.

craig, it'll be fine as long as it ends behind your drivers door. i would put an elbow on it cos you don't want Grimace fumes swirling under the cabin.

so your too soft to sit ontop of the fuel tank like the rest of us 40 owners??

mine came with tanks under the seat so i have miles of room under there.

infact mine has duel exhausts from the muffler back, so i can pretend my 2F is really an 8.

cut it up!!!!!!!!!!! cant imagine how your tyre hits it but hey these things do happen?
