When driving my lux down the road this arvo with the hubs locked I could hear a bit of a clunking noise coming from the front end. So when I get under and have a look tonight I thought maybe I had done a CV but the flange that comes out of the diff on the drivers side has heaps of movement up and down.
Does that mean I have buggered a bearing or something in there?
It still seams to drive in 4wd OK but makes a bit of noise sometimes.
I was hoping to go for a drive with the Perth outerlimits crew this weekend but it looks like that might be a bad idea .
So can anyone help me diagnose my problem?
The SAS is looking a better idea every day .

Your in luck..... I've got a complete 4.865 locked IFS complete with Ranchos, torsion bars, axels & new boots all round up for sale coz I've gone SOLID

Howcome the crown wheels bust easier than the CV's? when the CV is what, 2 inches in diameter, and relatively unprotected... and the crown wheel is 7.5" inches and protected...?

I broke 2 cv`s before a centre and that was a 4.8 with auto locker just lucky i think,The centre will bust cause all the strain go`s through the one centre and then to each cv.My cv`s broke each time cause one wheel was in the air

Well I ignored the slight clunking noise and went wheeling today and after the first hill climb the clunking turned into intermitant banging coming from the drivers side that is savage enough to be felt in the steering as a jerking feeling. Had to do some 2 wheel driving with the rear locker.
But its all good caus I have bought a solid front diff this weekend .
Now just need to collect all the other bits I need and get stuck into the SAS.
HG if your front end was for sale a month ago I would have said "SOLD" but now I will say "SCREW IFS Im going SOLID".
How much are you after for it anyway?

ill bet my arse that the crown wheel is buggered, ive smashed 4 of em in my ifs lux, they are weak as piss, the noise you describe sounds exactly mine does everytime one breaks

Havnt had a good look yet.
Its my daily driver and its driving fine in 2wd so I probably wont be in a huge hurry to rip into it.
And I wont be fixing the IFS anyway. I will be collecting bits for my SAS.
I will post up when I look into it but it wont be for a bit.

how much and what kind of locker does it have in it
OK tonight I drained the oil from the front diff and few bits of teeth came out with it .
Oh well that means I can sell my CVs when I do my SAS as it isnt them that are buggered.

Someone asked "why would the Crown wheel and pinion bust all the time and bust before CV's"
Well with all IFS luxs the backing plate for the Crown wheel is very thin!!!
As a result when under load the pinion pushes the Crown wheel, and since the backing plate is thin it causes the crown wheel to flex away slightly which then meens that the pinion is driving on the outer parts of the teeth. I hope that makes sense!! By driving on the outer parts of the teeth it causes them to chip/crack and eventually break off!
You will notice that if you ever speak to some one that still has the IFS but they have installed a ARB or Detroit locker, that they will not be breaking Crown wheels. This is due to the fact that the ARB and Detroit have the backing plate as part of the locker and is quite a bit thicker in design, this cuts down on the flexing and thus cuts down on the broken C/P. They would now however be busting CV's!
After fitting a front ARB locker I have never had a crown bust.
Did two in the open diff .
I have never had a CV let go with the locker (in) as power is spreed
even across the two wheels.
Mind you if you don't drive em right with front locked it will bust up a CV.
I think most comon CV bust is when one wheel is lifted and speeds up,when it comes down BANG CV or Crown.
The good part off the locker is wheels stay at constant speed.
