Golfballs

Post by antt »

Anyone here in aus tried the golfballs in the tires trick to get them to balance? My mongrels are waaaay out of balance (cant got above 70kph or the car starts to bounce), so this weekend i was gonna give it a try.

i've read all the threads on pirate about it, and most reckon it works but can be noisy which i couldn't care less about. the yanks seem to run 6-8 in 37-40 inch tires, so whadda reckon for my piddly little 32's?

can i clarify for the n00bs like me out there, you put golf balls in your tyres for stability? the same way as tractors have water in there tyres?
indubitably

yes, putting golfballs inside the tires

i think you'll find though that tractors put water in to add weight to the front or back to help with traction, not for high speed balancing

from this thread:
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modules/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7182&highlight=
Firetruck quotes the following

FireTruck wrote:I just threw 6 golf balls inside each of my 38'5 SX's...

Thought it was worth a try - didn't think it would work - but these things ride better than my 'balanced' 35" centipedes ever did.

Why 6? Read that a guy with 36's used 4 and it worked, and a guy with 40's used 8... had to get out my calculator to take an average of course.

What about squash balls antt, wouldn't be as noisy and the lighter weight might suit your smaller tyre size???

Antt, i'm not saying that it won't or doesn't work. In fact everything i have ever read about it seems to show that it does work!

But for 32's you should be able to get them balanced pretty well spot on!

You may have thrown a weight or the person doing it had no idea or you may have bent a rim or something!

It costs bugger all to get them balanced!

The main reason they run the Golf balls is usually in larger tyres that are hard to balance and some shops don't even bother with them and some shops do not have the equipment to throw a 38 or 40 inch tyre. So the golf ball trick does the job!

I couldn't be farked pulling each tyre off and then seating them again, i would just take it to Fourbys and get them to balance them!

when i had my mongrels they were all balanced under 70 grams...even my new simex pedes r pretty good 3 at about 70 gs a nd 1 at 280, i think u need to change tyre shops.

i did try to get them balanced about 2 months ago and the tire mob gave up after putting 500grams iirc on one side of the tires and they were still miles out.

they used to be balanced, in fact i drove to landcruiser on them for short course round 1 this year, and they were fine, but since then i've ripped most of the outer lugs off from rocks and also from the tire and guard having a disagreement :D

so it's only the rear two that seem to be the problem, cause there is no shake whatsoever from the front one's on the road.

think i'll just try it on saturday with maybe 4 balls in each tire

this is actuslly an interesting thread, i have considered doing this, casue nearly evryu2 months, i have to get my MTRs rebalanced, i might look at doing this on a old tire, get it ballanced, to see how far its out, then add the balls, and see what happens,

Give it a go I reckon, but use those super balls from Australian geographic that flash and make all sorts of strange noises, if its going to be noisy might as well be fun

Its stands to reason that smaller tyres need smaller balls.

38"+ tyres need golf balls

Under 38" you need to use the balls out of your computer mouse ;)

Edit: When I wrote that it was a joke, but the more I think about it the better it sounds. They have a bit of weight and they are rubber coated so they wont nake as much noise as golf balls.

I might patent my "Mouse Ball Balancers" :D

Sorry to spoil it for ya but i don't think you were the first to come up with that idea.

not bad thinking shorty40, might use ball bearings instead of golfballs, cause i have nfi where i'd get 8 mouseballs before tomorrow :?

no, it's not for stability, it's for balance - that is, rotational balance of the wheel, to reduce vibration and maintain control at higher speeds.

tractors use water in the tyres mostly for weight, to increase traction so they can pull a heavier load/rip deeper/plough wider etc.

Just because he 'suggested' using them doesnt mean he patented the idea :D

Plus mine will have little "MBB" logos on them

My Mouse has one ball bigger than the other. Will Mouse Ball Balancers help my unbalanced mouse? poor little guy gets a hard time from all the other mice.

i don't reckon having spheres of hardened steel bouncing around in your rims is a real good idea ROFL...

would sound pretty cool at just the right speed for the bb's to come up and drop onto the inside of the rim

The max height the BBs are going to fall from in Ants rig is 8.5 inches. Can that cause too much damage ?

Is there not some sort of fluid that you can use in the tyres.

PITA if they've been super glued shut...my school did this to each mouse which was really dodge cause when there was too much gunk caught up in the rollers u couldn't take the thingo off and get rid of the gunk u just had to fight with a spastic mouse that woudn't move around nicely.

Anyway spose should get back on to topic:

 Imagine popping a rim that is running ball bearings...that wouldn't be very cool would it.

These are all HIGH pressure processes. The balls will drop from a small height at low speeds.

And the mouse balls I suggested have rubber coating on them.

Something for Ant to think about anyway if he is having hassles balancing them the traditional way.

technically, they're high velocity processes, no pressure is involved. The balls in the wheel might be moving slowly but they're going to do it a lot of times. in the end it's like the difference between using say a hand drill or a pwer drill - the energy-rate (ie power) is different, but given enough time, the same job cam be accomplished with either tool. Bead blasting uses high particle velocity to make the job fast, you can do the same job over a longer time with a low power tool like say a wire brush.

And the mouse balls I suggested have rubber coating on them.

yeah I reckon they might be a goer, but acquiring the required number might be a challenge. maybe a powder is more the stuff, like the "Equal" stuff, or a liquid - maybe brake fluid - wouldn't boil/gas and won't attack rubber. water is no good as it will make big differences to the pressure with temperature, oil will attack the rubber.
