ok this is embarassing I have a light metallic grinding noise coming from under the gf's feroza when changing 1-2 2-3 and the reverse or decelerating in 3rd or 2nd. It's only light but sounds like the gbox of transfer NOT GOOD
Engine oil is fine but HTF do I check the gbox + transfer levels Can't find dipsticks
Any ideas what it might be BTW not front diff as hubs unlocked + in 2wd still does it
On the side of the gearbox and transfer case there are two large plugs- one high (about 1/2 way up the side) and the other low. They have a large hex head on them (22 or 24mm socket fits IIRC?)
The bottom one is the drain and the upper one is the filler. To check the level unscrew the filler and shove your finger in- you should be able to feel the oil (or get it on your finger tip). That means there's enough in there.
and when you open the drain plugs, oil shouldnt come out of either of em. If oil does, you've got water in.
It is 'reasonably' common for gearbox woes after about 200,000. 3rd usually lets go, and creates issues. I had the input cluster, 3rd gear, and the input shaft shit itself. Not a nice noise!!!

ha.. speaking of tranny woes... i've just lost reverse the other day.... yep. if i want to back up, i gotta get out and push it, not such an easy task sometimes... lol.

Well after a few w/ends away having DIRTY weekends, going through many a river crossing, I decided to do a total oil change (just to be sure, as i haven't touched 'em since buying my roza) but after doing the box and transfer, I am having great difficulty with 1st, 2nd and 5th. Very tight and feels like the stick is rubbing up against the side of the gate, is this common, or even a problem, or could I have used the wrong oil..??
I used 80-90 grade in the diffs, the transfer and the tranny...??
Should this be ok??

Thanks for the tip, tried everywhere to get 75-90 (I have the downloaded manual for the Feroza), but couldn't find it, so I went with the 80-90, will this cause my transfer or diffs n e probs...?? I think not, but better just to check, where can I get 75-90..?? Am obviously in Sydney, so if you know of an outlet, would be eternally in ur debt.... The harsh feeling it gives is driving me insane... was so good before...

Thanks guys, seems to be fixing itself, maybe it was just a bit grubby in the linkage and has cleared, is still a bit tight, so I will try ur ideas, can't hurt any... Again, thanks guys...

Not sure if anyone's problems have been resolved here...but I have had the exact same problem as Mick frist stated. Crunching going into reverse, 1st and sometimes 2nd. It was almost impossible to get it into 1st without putting all your force behind.
So took it to the mechanic (expecting that there would be soemthing wrong with the synchro as the oil levels were fine) and $10 later it was fixed! He tightened the clutch cable!!!! I felt sooo stupid for not thinking of this.
So anyway I would try that people before you do anything drastic!
Mine is now an absolute PLEASURE to drive!!!
