New engine for my 96 2.8D Hilux

Post by slr1968 »

Just after some opinions on what would be the easiest and best option to re-engine my new little truck. Would like to stay with a deisel but would like something with more power. Its the IFS extra cab model cant remember the model number. Was thinking about a 3.0L turbo from a Prado or similar.

Thanks for any info.

If you want to stay with diesel replace the 3L 2.8 litre with the newer 5L
3 litre diesel all bolts up the same

Hilux Re-engine

Post by slr1968 »

Thought of that but id like some more power, i was thinking about a 3.0L Turbo from a newer Hilux, Surf or a Prado. Im just nort sure of the cost and ease of this sort of conversion.

Has anyone attempted this conversion.

I swaped the 3.0 TD (1KZ) hilux motor and gearbox (R151F) into an 84 extra cab hilux. It originally had a 3y petrol engine. Had to get the engine mounts moved slighlty ($500) but used the existing gearbox crossmember in stock location. Used stock diesel radiator, clutch master, powersteering box, speedo cable. modified both drive shafts. $500 for wiring loom conversion. Engine, gearbox, wiring loom incl. computer and sundry parts cost $6500 from a complete wreck with 12000kms on it.

There was a picture of it (silver hilux) on the Off Road Industries website.

It goes like the clappers. really torquey motor. Accelerates up big hills on the freeway in 5th gear. Goes way better then my brothers 2.8 hilux with turbo. Great on fuel.

You might get the feeling that I love the end result!

Got a quote for a 1KZ import Surf motor from Alljap in Brisbane. $2950

Pretty easy swap just a bit expensive. Still its far cheaper than a newish TD hilux.

Looked at putting a 5L into it then adding a turbo but in the end that motor and turbo kit would cost nearly $10 000
