I have this nasty noise happening when doing some hard work in the 60 and have been unable to spot it.
Had a front locker installed since its been happening and its only happened on rocky hills like rover park.
Got some footage of it on a handycam last weekend if anyones up to speculating on it :) its 1.6mb @ http://members.iinet.net.au/~dibbz/bad-noise.wmv
It looks like it was effecting drive in the video but that was just me backing off far enough to stop the noise. Theres no loss of power although I haven't put the foot down when its happening.
I'm thinking its possibly the front drive in the transfer case... no idea.

from the frequency of the noise it does sound gearbox ish... What part of the truck does the noise come from ?
Agreed. I can't really think of something that would make that noise in your front diff since the locker has been put in. Does the noise only occur when you load it up? Front locker on?
If you want a spare 60 for bits-

heh heh "that's that noiiiiiiise!"
it doesn't souund like a "gearbox" noise to me, but the audio quality of that clip is obviosuly less than hi-fi. sounds more like a dry bearing, possibly clutch relese bearing or spigot bearing, maybe even alternator, but these things would happen all the time, not just on steep hills. It maybe sounds kind of like the front drive dog in the transfer case trying to engage when there is a rpm difference between front and rear tailshafts. does your 60 have manual or vacuum 4WD actuation?
also another thought, it could be the back bearing on the transfer input shaft,
if the nut on the end of the shaft gets loose, the shaft can spin in the bearing, would maybe make that kind of noise. you can check by pulling off the round cover on the back of the transfer and checking the tightness of the nut just inside.
would really need to hear the noise in real life to get a more accurate idea of what it is though.

Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
Were the hubs fully locked in? Possibly a fried hub, sounds about the right frequency (pitch) for that to be a possibility.
Another possibility is a stripped spline in the front driveshaft going into the sidegears.

George Carlin, an American Comedian said; "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise that half of them are stupider than that".
Thanks for the replies guys..
I had the hubs taken off and eyed over when the diff went in, the noise is kinda central-drivers side/forward to the car when made me think originally its the diff or the tcase.
This has only occured in 4wd but next time I'll be trying 2wd to see what happens.
If only there was somewhere to drive at Gebung near my mechanic :) Until he hears it he will be reluctant to just pull it apart... need to take a tilt tray to rover park and drive it good and proper hehehe...
I'll check that nut today, thanks dumbdunce..
The opther option is to just forget about it and buy a car trailer and a 40 series. ho ho ho.
