New project..
New project..
My old 92 1.3L is almost dead(200,000 kms) so I've decided to drop in a new engine. I've picked up another 92 sierra with a toyota 4AGE conversion for $800 and HOPEFULLY!!!! seeing as they are identical cars, it'll be a straight forward swap. I dropped my engine and gearbox out today and will get the replacement Sat morning.. Anyone that has done this conversion and knows of any pitfalls or traps to look out for, your advice will be greatly appreciated, otherwise I'll keep you all updated as I go..
Ps I have a custom built fuel tank, will I have to replace this to allow for the higher fuel pressure needed for the EFI??

If the engine mount brackets on the chassis rails have been modified (eg. new ones welded on) then i'd say it's not going to be a straight forward swap.
You shouldn't need to replace the tank you already have. As Dozoor said you can just run a HP pump in line (make sure you gravity feed the HP pump) or you could set up a surge tank.
I know that the zuk i'm buying is set up with a surge tank, just thought i might have needed a special main tank as well, but obviously not. Not sure about the engine mounts, I'll find out t'mrow, hopefully it's nothing to difficult...

There is nothing wrong with the zuk...The guy I'm buying it off had to move to Brissy and couldn't take it(unregistered) He's taking the tyres (32inch motorway mongrels) and the rear leaf springs, the rest is mine. It's actually a really well set up car, 4AGE engine, Toyota 5spd, 4 wheel disc brakes, laminated diffs, tube bars front and rear. The body on it is a little sad but the rest is in very good nic. In fact some of you guys on here might know the guy that originally built the car, I think he won some offroad events in it. I'll try and find out his name t'mrow when I pick the car up.

How bad is this sierra anyway Would it be easier to swap the body onto the cheapie
Apparently the donor zuk has/was never set up for on-raod purposes. So I think I would have a really hard time getting it registered. For some reason the leaf spring mounts have been moved in closer together, and sit directly under the chassis rails. Why this was done,(anyone on here heard of doing this?) and how legal it is I don't know, but I was told the spring mounts are welded to the diff, so I am assuming that it might be a SPOA mod...and I know that's illegal in QLD.
As for just swapping bodies.... I don't think it would be an advantage.. I'd have to transfer my body, springs, diff lock(and I have no idea how to install an air locker), and a bit of other crap onto it, rather then just the engine/gear box into mine.
Damo, it has custom engine mounts, but luckily they bolt onto the stock chassis supports, however, it looks like I'll have to weld up a bit of box section to the chassis to support the gearbox... hopefully the rest should be straight forward.

Just a quick update... My original plan has gone out the window!! Now that I actually have the zuk, I discovered that it is a little bit different to how it was discribed..
I'm now in the process of swapping the two bodies.. The zuk bought has a very good chasis set up, with custom shockie mounts, 4 wheel disc brakes, extended brake lines. laminated diff housings, the tube bars are welded on, and to fit the 4AGE engine there is cross members already in place for the toyota gearbox and the engine mounts are completly different to the sierra ones(as Damo thought) and are already welded in place. So as suggested it would be a lot easier to swap body's then the engine/gearbox.
