Mongrels are Awesome!!
Just came back from Gembrook, which has been BELTED by rain all week. Only saw 8 or 9 other trucks all day! Tracks like Andersons, and Goanna were inpassable. Didn't even think about Gentle Annie!
Went as shotgun in a GQ shorty and played with:
Surf with Fr & Rr lockers & 35" Jungle Trekkers (SAS Front)
Surf with Fr & Rr lockers & 35" Mickey T Claws, IFS front
LWB Pajero Fr Locker, Rr LSD & 33" Mongrels, IFS front
All good drivers, and was gobsmacked by the Mongrels! Easily got up everywhere the bigger boots did and more, even with an IFS front hangin wheels. Up the clay the others were spinning wheels, and slicking up the ruts, where as the Mongrels just crawled up with NO wheelspin, even on 3 wheels! No clogging up with the clay, and actually left tread marks up the boggy tracks!
Some other little hills were done in 2WD where others where you'd be needing 4WD with 'standard' muddies!
A lot of people SHITEcan these tyres, but at under $200 each, you can't go wrong. No problem with bagging out at lower pressures, opposite to what gets written up. And they are quieter than the Jungle Trekkers on road as well.
I run Simex M/T's which can surprise me where they can go, but I kept pickin my jaw up off the floor. Can't wait for Mongrels come out in a 35 x 12.5 x R15.

Re: Mongrels are Awesome!!
do you run them as an everyday tyre? if so how bad is wear/noise?
Not my car, just a friends. Yeah they're 33x12.5xR15.
The car is his daily driver, and apparently they are no worse than normal muddies like BFG's etc. in terms of noise. Dry cornering isn't an issue, but he does treat it with respect in the wet, and brakes a little earlier than normal. He's only had 'em for a month, but reports indicate 40,000 plus kms no problems...
Cheers,
Pat

Re: Mongrels are Awesome!!
anyone got any pics of the 33 mongrels?
mongrels
stupid questions!
Who makes them, where to get them in Melb.
DO THEY MAKE A 33X10.5? So far BFG and Simex are the only tyre manufacturer who make anything in a 33 x 10.5 or less!! This SUcks! Can anyone help me. Due to circumstances i need 33 height, but for road tyres (A/T) i need narrow for handling. Will probably get same size for M/T. Can anyone help?

Retail for 33"s is $219. He got his for $189 each fitted, although he also bought 15x 8 sunraysias at the same time. Contact Widetread Tyres, Burwood Hwy, Ferntree Gully Vic. I don't have their phone number though....
You can get everywhere! ARB, Pro Comp, or any 4wd outlet! As for sizes, widths etc, check out www.motorway-tyres.com au, I think that's right.
Beware there are 2 types of tyre available, a retread style tyre, and the MonoForm style, which re-covers the tyre from bead to bead. The monoforms are the go, as the sidewalls are thicker. They are all made from Goodyear MT/R carcasses, so they're tough as nails. I know that 33"s are marching out the door, and have just released a 34x12.5x16 tyre. Apparently there still isn't enough 35" carcasses from the USA to start producing bigger sizes yet.

No, they don't do the 33 x 10.5 but the new Silverstone Xtreme is supposedly coming in a 33 x 9.5

ooh, veeeery interesting
Ive had them as adaily driver tyre on my heap then my lux and back on to the heap when i sold it. they did about 25k and were still about 50% but christ were they noisy once they get worn. but they only rumble when new. once they start to scollop they can be heard from about 2 mile away. Excellent tyre though tough and cheap.Only complaint was when you boot it they get so much traction in the rear that the front tends to plow a bit but you get used to that
