TD5 what to look for !
I`m going to have a look at a td5 defender tray back
just wondering what to look out for, its done 133000ks 2000 model
I`ve only ever had rover V8s so I`m not up to speed
on diesels [ no V8s in tray backs-bummer] So any
knowledge would be appreciated.
Thanks JEFF

rover money pit on mogs !!!
Some of the very early models had problems with flywheel vibration, so make sure it idles smoothly, accelerates smoothly, and the clutch works without shuddering. Try to find evidence (documented or physical) of the fuel filter(s) being replaced at regular intervals - you want those expensive injectors to last as long as possible!!! And also of course the usual stuff like oil, etc - and check for excess oil in the turbo outlet/intercooler.

Thanks for the imfo on what to look. Took it for a
drive & it drove quite nice, so I`m keen to buy it.
Thought I`d better get it check out by a Rover place
& there having a look at it on friday for me. The thing
is they suggested not getting a TD5 but a low k 300tdi.
They told me parts are $$$ a set of hoses is about $500
Living 3hrs from Perth could prove a problem if I have
trouble with computors the motors at this stage cannot
be rebuilt, head work can be about $5000.& the injectors
cost hundreds. So now I`m not sure if i need to go there.
Plus how long will FORD produce parts for a deleted motor???
TD5 owners what do you think??? Many dramas, $$$$, etc.
Thanks JEFF

I think its a BMW motor
it may have been designed while LR was owned by BMW but is probably more rover than BMW as they had there own 2.5 tdi 6cyl diesel. but i think the point that JBELL was making is that ford had nothing to do with it. they still produce td5's for defenders as they won't get the new v6 ford/peugot engine until they redesign the defender. the parts thing should be ok. i can't see an availablility problem for parts. you can get good power and toque from the td5, but i'm very happy with my 300tdi, no problems and 170,000. touch wood. just make sure it has the sals rear diff.
