Mighty 73 MWB

Post by 4WRNING »

Need 2 ask a question and get an opinion...

Firstly, are 73series lever or vacuum operated 4x4?

Secondly, may have found a sweet 73series but just wondering if it is worth $9999...

Its got a good body, BFG muddies 35's on 15x10s, lifted, bullbar driving lights...

Would you guys pay that for it, or something similar...

I think most of the 73s will have the vacuum shifter.I have an undated brochure that says its standard but earlier models may have the man shift but Ive never seen one.
These go from about $2k with a dead or dying engine/drivetrain up to about 11k for a really nice one
You didnt mention whether it was diesel or petrol, but there isnt much difference in the price for B or F motors

Ok,the owner will expect something for the extras, but those kinds of mods are usually used in conjunction with hard core stuff.

It will all depend on the mechanical condition, the rust and the maintenace.
Spend a fair bit of time underneath checking for leaks, signs of abuse ect.

When I was test driving, I came across 1 that had a manual shift. All the others were Vac operated.

I haven't looked at prices recently but if I had've found a clean example for $10k last year when I was looking I would have got it. I paid a little more for one with an immaculate interior and a dying engine cos I new the V8 would go in eventually.

Its always good to arm yourself with adds from trading post, carpoint or aus 4x4 trader to prove to the seller they are charging too much (select adds carefully of course!!)

Good luck!

Most Japanese imports 73's would have vacuum shift transfers. You guys get many MWB's down under?

I looked at a middy with a 3b (aftermarket turbo) with winch bar, rear airlocker new style 33inch bfg muddies 7 lifted springs for 10 k

I also came acoss a stocko for 5k so I guess you need to look at the accessories that are on it, see what they add up to, subtract that from the sell price and you have an idea of what your buying it for

Hi guys.. Well i went to check it out. It had a winchbar/winch, was not of the vacuum style ('85 model) but it had an old 350chev in it, whereas i was looking for diesel.

Its pretty good but. Ahwell...

Thanks for your input guys... I still think im going to go down the 73 path, as they look wickd with 35s...

The diesel would push 35s no worries, yeah?

yeah, chev might be bit too thirsty. for me anyway.

only seen one in person on 35, looked real good. mine has 33, but hoping to step up a size in either centipedes or radial claws. but i would suggest turbo as on my current 33's can be real slow up hills onroad (speed drops to 60kph on big hills). still crawls good tho so not sure about transfer gears when using 35's

Yes... Yes they do look wicked with 35's. My bonnet almost comes upto my underarm now, lovin' it...

Put them on on Saturday and drove it home form the Suspension shop. 35s on the petrol did not really affect speed performance much  (honestly - if at all)... Have not really had it out and used a tank of fuel yet to see how it goes that way. :?

Got the Plywood interior in it too, looks pretty sweet. Now just chasing another windscreen. ;)

Gotta get some photos next weekend (in Rocky this week again) and I will be posting them up soon enough. Will start work on the 60 Series diffs soon enough too.

I dunno about exact figures Dave but just driving around I reckon the MWB are about 1% of the cruiser population although its increasing with the Japanese grey imports..
Th official landcruiser imports into oz are something like 420,000 between 1970-2002
