Hi Flow Cat for TJ

Post by jeeperman »

To all the 4x4 guru's out there, my catalytic converter has decided that enough is enough and has packed it in. I am able to get a hold of a high flow cat for roughly the same price as a regular cat. I was just wondering if they are worth it, if they provide more power instead of just more noise, and also if fuel consumption is improved. I already have fitted 2 1/2 in extractors and sports exhaust. its a 1997 Wrangler.

Any info would be great.
Cheers
Dan

I run a hi flow Cat and muffler, 2.5" mandrell bent system, custom extractors, etc...

Yes, a high (or free) flow cat will give you some extra poke... but only if the rest of your system is set up to take advantage of it. What is mean is if you have a big restriction in your muffler the cat won't make a big difference... but if your cat is the thing restricting the flow now then using a high flow jobbie will give you some effect.

I also run a K&N, bored TB, bored TB spacer, and a MAP sensor (fuel curve correction module)... that's the other side - if all the restriction is on the front end then it won't make a huge difference what you do on the back end.

I would say go for it - at least then it will be somewhat future proof as you continue to upgrade stuff.
