cooper tyres

Post by Chicken Legs »

I am looking to fit a set of cooper tyres to my vehicle. All the BS in the brochure says there the ants pants, even Mike Layland uses them!!
This forum seems like a good place to dig up a little more BS be it good or bad. Your thoughts and experances would be apreciated?

I have cooper ST's on my Disco. The disco spends 80% of its time on the road, however when we go off road i am towing the trailer and buggy. Often to access comps and events i have to tow up some pretty steep climbs and loose dirt. They grip really well and they are lasting as well as they say they do! I think for a tourer or Mild 4wheeler they are awesome!

My dad has ST's on a LC80 and he is pretty happy with them. With all the siping in the tread, they do tend to chip on loose rocky roads. My Brother has them also on a GU and allthough it hasnt spent much time off-road, they did work very well in the snow.
But if it is STT's you want. I brought some 2nd hand and they where a very good tyre. Took alot of punishment, there where a couple of lugs missing. But they still held air no problems.
Would I buy coppers again yep, will most likly try and get copper ST's for a road tyre/ General off-road, it's that or goodyear MT/Rs (but I dont think they will last anywhere near as long).

BS for sure. I've lived in North America my whole life and NEVER seen a Cooper tire. Never seen anyplace that sells them.

I have the ST's on my 80 series 315/75 r16.
tried them in the mud the other day and was suprised.
thoght they would be shit but they were quite good.
I reckon there the best option if you don't want to go full mud tyre.

Ive been running STs for about 20,000km, very happy with them, hardly any wear and grip well on road and gravel tracks.

Off road I find them better than the bfg AT....

Get clogged when it gets really muddy, but then most do.

I'll put 33" STs on my Patrol when I get it soon.

Be careful with the warranty issues - some places are really good with the warranty and others pretty ordinary. Also the Milage wrranty does NOT cover STT's.

I'm using some secondhand STT's that had done a cross country jaunt and still have heaps of tread and work well.

If you read the related links there can be some issues with tyre pressure on the ST's on gibber and they can get torn in some circumstances pretty easy.

Not much likes gibber though.....

True... especially if it's not a full lug tyre. All Terrains just don't stand up to continual use on loose shale. Get rapid wear and nasty chipping. Cooper have got an ST-C available in 3 sizes which is designed more for mine site application.

The distinction is that it's a cut and chip resistant compound, which will gain more mileage if you spend more of your time in these conditions.
- Quicker wear on the blacktop compared to the Sure Trac.
It'd pay if if you are playing regularly....STT!!!

It must say something about this product that if over the past two days nobody has said a bad thing about it.
I would have expected that if anyone has had a bad experance with these tyres that my question would been like cow shit to a fly.

Got about 40K on my ST-C's after about 50% metro blacktop, 40% outback touring, 10% bush tracks witha small amount of rockhopping. Heaps better traction than the previous tyres in all conditions. Blacktop is about the same.

No chipping but split a sidewall on a sharp piece of shale on a steep track which was unrepairable and staked the bottom sidewall on another which was repaired.

If you are after a no bullshit and non bias opinion then send Blu125 (Chris) a PM and ask his opinion. He is from Singhs Tyre and Mechanical (Cooper dealer) and is a top bloke. As I said he is a really nice bloke with a shit load of extreme offroad experience and will give you a true tyre compairo. They are a fairly good tyre from what I hear but I guess there is a reason that Chris (a cooper tyre dealer) runs Baja Claws.

Just my $0.02 worth.
Cheers

Can you really compare a ST or STT to a baja claw? :?

Im thinking about ST or STT in 35's for my truck. Ive heard good and bad about them, but you hear good and bad about everything.

Good things ive heard basically revolve around the tyres durability. The bad things ive heard is that they are a tad average on rocks and broken terrain as far as grip is concerned.

Ive never driven or seen a truck with them fitted so I wouldn't know from personal experiance. But I would say Cooper didn't become a big company by selling crap.

well I haven't been online for a couple of days.

I have 315/75 ST's on the 80.

for roadies and/or for MILD offroad, they are ok, however they are VERY noisy on the road. they are absolutely hopeless on rocks, however in mud they perform surprising well, consistenly outdriving MT/R's. the sidewalls are what I have the biggest whenge about - I was teaching a girl to drive in an open paddock - slow driving, no rocks, no hooliganism, and a twig the size of a matchstick went right through the sidewall, right on the tread shoulder. This is a brand new tyre (les than 5000km on it) and the tyre is technically ruined, and the warranty does not cover sidewall damage. now to the tread - if you use the ST's on rocks, it will tear off in expensive looking chunks, the leading edge of the blocks disappears in a hower of chunks of rubber the first time they even look at a mild rock step. STT's are famous for losing entire tread blocks because the compound is so hard the root of the block fatigues and they just fall off.

in my opinion the MT/R's are a better option for most surfaces, and if you want a more dedicated mud tyre then consider simex or swamper.

cheers
