Gearbox/ Clutch Noise???

Post by kroozer91 »

Hi guys, :?:

I own a 91 80 series full time naturally aspirated 1HZ cruiser. While i was looking to buy one i test drove many different year models and about 60% of the cars i test drove had this funny noise when you start the engine.

What happens is when you start the car there is a burrrr burrrr noise like something in the box or clutch is vibrating. The noise disappears when the clutch is depressed. I have had this happen on many cruisers.

Me ol man drives a 75 series (do they have the same box) its the same year model as mine and it doesnt have this noise

Any Ideas

It will do it reguardless of how many time the car is started, hot or cold.

You can feel a slight vibration throught the pedal but only when the clutch isnt depressed!!

I had a similar problem with my hilux it would make a noise on idle with the clutch in or out but as the clutch was slipped it made a screech noise.
Does yours do this?
If it does get your gearbox out and check the mains bearing and input shaft because mine had chewed threw 3 of the 8 ball bearings in the mains bearings and so it could move a fair bit. My dad had the same problem in his 2004 hilux i think it is a pretty common problem for toyota boxs.
Hope that has helped

Thanks Guys just went and had a look underneath the beast, umm

The car has done 348 000 odd kms, by the looks of it the clutch has been redone as the box seal isnt the original one as in you can see where it has been split and a new seal put back in....

The clutch dosent make any noises even when running very smooth operation, umm as i sait it only does this when the car is first started ;)

another option drop the gbox oil into a clean container n transfer in a seperate container n check the colour of oil .look for any metallic look in oil ,grey is usually bearing ,gold is synchro .oil should be a clean colour simalar to eng oil, if mercy is water in it

Hey took the car to on track 4x4 the mech there said that it is possibly the berring at the front that locates the shaft sait it was quite common amongst 80 series boxes...

He also told me that it will eventually get worse and will need replacing at some point when it starts to squeel so yeh

Will try gving her a complete service this weekend time permitting to see how it goes

Thanks Guys for all the coments and help

it's probably a bit of chatter in the gearbox, it's nothing to worry about it.

it's noises when you're driving/decelerating that you need to worry about.

Yeah it will lurch in full time, mines fine now after the part time kit has gone in, I thought it was the gearbox but it feels great now(maybe the oil change :P), getting the front end rebuilt next week, need new CV's,seals, front wheel bearings etc so hopefully it gets rid of that lurch in 4wd.

drop the front prop shaft off and drive it round with CDL engaged and see what it drives like.

Yeh will get a part time kit for it that and the claws do nothing for the fuel economy..

So just undo the front shaft and engage the CDL will have to give it a go on me property 2morrow

great idea ;)
