Diff shaving question.

Diff shaving question.
Soon I will be doing my SAS and will be shaving the diffs to get a little more clearance and a smooth bottom to slide over stuff.

Well my question is - At the same time as doing this I will be installing a new crownwheel and pinion and air locker. I know that when fitting new diff gears they should be runn in and then the oil drained and replaced to get rid of metal filings and the like.
With a shaved diff and no drain plug I will be draining oil from the lower 2 stud holes and 1 I wont be able to drain ALL of the oil out and 2 I wont have a magnetic drain plug to suck the metal on to.
So should I run the diff in and then pull the diff and shave it or should I just hoe into it now while its out and not worry?
I have heard of people glueing a magnet into the diff to catch metal bits but Im not sure that is a good idea, if the magnet broke loose and went into the gears it could get painfull.

Why not weld a drain plug in the bottom with the magnet on then grind the top of smooth how much do you realy save .Do no were there is a zuk only 1 liter unlicenced but guy only wants $850 for it .Tipical i bought mine last week and this week there was a long wheel base for sale in Rockingham real cheap

do you mean indipendant or solid axle
if solid axle you could just get a highpinion diff with alot of protection/strengthening of the housing and it could be as flat on the bottom as you want it to be, it would be almost impossible to have the axle shafts coming out much lower than in a high pinion diff.
weld a steel tube inside that reaches the bottom of the diff housing and goes to a plug at the top of the housing.
then just pressureise the housing to a couple of psi and it should force all the oil out
if the seals leak then create a vaccuum on the steel tube to suck the oil out but leave the oil filler plug out while you do it.

I allready have a High pinion centre to go into the Hilux front diff but that doesnt mean that I can shave more off the bottom of the diff. The crownwheel is still in the the same spot just the pinion is higher.

I assume the army trucks you are refering to are Mercedes Unimogs which have Portal step down reduction hubs thet raise the diff centre about 6 inches higher. and yes portal hubs are available to the general public if you have a Land/RangeRover .

yeah i have seen out on the road now and then the army trucks, it looks as if where the axle meets the hub its angled down to give more clearance and there is no sign of the diff sticking down in the middle, gives a heap of clearance, i have always thought that would be lovely on a fourby (probably expensive too). Dunno if you get what i mean from that explanation but next time you see and army truck have a look.

i got 30mm out of the GQ front under my luxy last friday..
