According to the book I have

4.2 Diesel 0.35mm
4.2 Petrol 0.38mm

makes no mention if there is a difference with a turbo

BTW, is that hot or cold??
I take it it's the same for inlet and exhaust.

Engine Hot (not running)
Number one piston TDC on compression stroke and adjust valves 1 2 4 5 8 & 9.
Rotate one revolution and adjust valves 3 6 7 10 11 & 12

Sorry for asking what everyone probably already knows but how do you know when Number 1 piston is at top dead centre on the compression stroke on a diesel?

Also does the rocker cover gasket need to be replaced each time it is removed?

The rocker cover gasket is rubber, so all you need to do is to remove the old gasket goo from it and put new gasket goo on it.

Rotate the crankshaft with rocker cover removed and keeping an eye on the harmoinc balancer mark to line up with the timing cover mark and check both valves of number 1 cylinder should have clearance, the exhaust valve of number 6 cylinder will be closing and the inlet valve of number 6 cylinder will be starting to open.

Another method for a diesel is.....

Slowly rotate the engine by hand as the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley come closer to the mark on the front cover. Place a finger over the fuel injector holein the cylinder head and continue to rotate slowly.

If the engine compression forces your finger from the hole as the marks come into alignment number one cylinder is on the compression stroke.
Align the left pulley timing mark with the mark on the engine front cover.

TDC for the remaining cylinders can be located by turning the crankshaft clockwise a 1/3 of a complete revolution at a time and following the firing order. At every 1/3 of a revolution the next cyclinder in the firing order will arrive TDC.

Gasket should be OK. Dont overtighten as cover can be distorted.

To adj valves turn motor so one cyl is rocking, adj opposite number.
ie. no 1 rocking adj 12
no2 rocking adj 11

(rule of 13)

etc
