Different shocks

Just wondering if anyone was using or had looked into using different shocks from other vehicles.

Have been looking at some commodore ones that look pretty long. Anyone else got any other suggestions.

I used cressida ones, and landcruiser ones, and HQ ones. The cressida ones were by far the best in the Vitara.

Ask antt - he ditched his OME's to do the same.

Comes down to right length.... then right damping. Suprisingly enough I've always found all the new 4wd ones way overdamped as far as ride quality on bumps even the supposedly soft ones.

This doesnt mean that they're necessarily stiff enough to drive comfortably without swaybars either.

I guess that's a case for adjustable suspension.

I too have heard of HQ, VL, sigma and others being used. They are generally very soft and quite long, but can be too much of both.

They also tend to have short lives as in a 4wd application they get side loaded far more than in a car so they tend to die pretty quick, and the eyes are weak and can stretch.

They can be cool to play around with but I don't think car shocks are viable as a long term solution.

In any case you have to do the same amount of work to fit a car shock (longer mounts, different mount configurations, brake lines etcetc) than a 4X4 shock and OME N76's are about $125 each, longer than all of the common car shocks, at least as soft, and beefy enough to take the abuse. In at least one project on the go at the moment, they are getting nod over ranchos (either 9012's or 9112's) based on cost and performance.

I used jackaroo and hilux shocks in mine but depends on the length needed.

Secret is gonna be getting something soft enough in a "4wd" manufacture to suit the lighter weight of the sierra.

Sure the OME's are gonna be right up there but at 4x the cost of a car type shock you can afford to replace more regularly or at least experiment a little.

The OME's or Ranchos wont last forever either, and by the time you bust a set of shocks you'll want to do something different and more radical with the car's suspension anyway IMHO. I think 4 years on the ranchos would be just as stuffed as your 4th set of commodore shocks.



Replacing shocks is also gonna be dependant on driving style and I'd say that moose would be a good example of how to break things
