Another rumor I heard, was it also had to do with some people not knowing what the little lever was actually for, and found it very convenient for hanging grocery and take away bags from in the passenger footwell, thus causing it to engage the diff-lock. AKA the "curry handle"

In removing the diff-lock and relying on TC it removed a lot of the idiot factor from the people who never planned to go off the beaten tack.
